Skills integration, professional transformation and growth A SSSI Perspective John Trinder President

SSSI SSSI – Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute Formed in 2009 by the amalgamation of the Institution of Surveyors and Spatial Sciences Institute Managed by a Board which is elected every year by the Consultative Council Consultative Council comprises representatives from all regions and Commissions

Commissions Land Surveying Engineering and Mining Surveying Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Spatial Information and Cartography Hydrographic Surveying

Topics covered Skills and competency SSSI Certification – benefits and eligibility Transformations within technologies in the surveying and spatial sciences profession Coping with these transformations – CPD Transformations within the professional environment - personal advancement Transformations in SSSI

Education and Training An education system aims to provide education and training Universities are responsible for Education - development of knowledge – it has long term aims Vocational training institutions are responsible for providing Training - skills development – it has shorter term aims The proof to the adequacy and effectiveness of an education and training system is the competency of the graduates

Competency Competency is expected to developed from education, training and experience Competency Standards: comprise individual units of competency, which is a broad area of work that can logically stand-alone. are detailed documents that specify the functions performed by an enterprise or industry are written in a special format can be used to assess/determine outcomes

Competency Based Training Competency based training is: Training designed to help people achieve the required outcomes in their employment, whatever the particular task. Intended to avoid theoretical training Once the training is completed the graduates have the necessary skills to do the work required of them. It must therefore be based on a set of competency standards

(F The Competency Model Clearinghouse - to inform the workforce investment system about the value of competency models, their development and use. Developed In collaboration with the GeoTech Center, the Employment and Training Administration (ETA) in USA. Core competencies Formal education Competencies gained from workplace Industry competencies Management competencies

Certification - SSSI Professional certification demonstrates the competency of a professional. It proves a person has knowledge, experience, and skills to perform a specific task. The proof comes in the form of a certificate earned by an examination process that is accredited by an organization It monitors and upholds prescribed standards for the particular industry involved SSSI Certification allows its members and non- members alike to gain recognition of their competence and integrity via a formal “Portfolio-based” process.

Benefits of Certification You gain a mark of excellence It is the differentiator in a crowd of other spatial professionals Certification is recognized by employers and it enhances your career opportunities You attain an extra measure of credibility, respect and recognition within/outside the professional community

Benefits of Certification It can lead to recognition by Government, and the community for your contribution to the spatial sciences. As an employer of a SSSI Certified Professional, you can: – Increase the confidence that your clients have in your company. – Use the Program as part of a career-development roadmap for your employees.

Eligibility The SSSI Certification Program is available to SSSI members and non-members. Each applicant must satisfy the requirements set out by that level of SSSI Certification. Applicants must also demonstrate a required set educational and professional experience.

" " Hydrographic Surveyor Certification General Certification for Spatial Professionals " ESP-AP for Engineering Surveying Professionals " GISP-AP Certification for GIS Professionals RSP for Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Professionals SSSI Certifications

AHSCP certifies surveyors at 2 competency levels Level 1 – – The highest attainable level of professional hydrographic surveying certification – Deep understanding (Degree equivalent level) of the theoretical aspects of hydrographic surveying. – Extensive experience in practical hydrographic surveying. – Experience in leadership and management of project teams. A Level 1 Hydrographic Surveyor is expected to: Plan, undertake and manage complex hydrographic surveying projects. Identify sources of error and resolve data discrepancies. Maintain quality assurance principles. Provide professional advice on hydrographic matters. Compile and approve project reports.

AHSCP certifies surveyors at two competency levels Level 2 – Initial professional level of hydrographic surveying certification: – A fundamental understanding (Diploma equivalent level) of the theoretical aspects of hydrographic surveying. – Practical experience in conducting various hydrographic surveying tasks. A Level 2 Hydrographic Surveyor is expected to: Undertake the survey plan as directed. Conduct data processing. Prepare reports.

GISP-AP GISP Certification is based on the Geographic Information Systems Certification Institute (GISCI) accreditation.Geographic Information Systems Certification Institute GISP-AP Certification is recognised by the GISCI as being equivalent to its GISP Certification. Individuals who have been awarded GISP-AP Certification by the SSSI are entitled to use the post nominal GISP-AP.

GISP-AP A GISP-AP has met the minimum standards set for this SSSI administered professional certification Based on educational achievement, professional experience and contributions to the profession. A “portfolio-based” internationally recognised GISP-AP certification program.

Transformation technologies Definition of Transformation: to change markedly the appearance or form of: Recent transformations in technologies in SSSI fields – Approaching the digital capture, visualization and modelling of our entire built environment because of: Internet of things approaching a trillion objects processing with almost unlimited power on the cloud big data enabling real-time analytics – Trend to convergence of GIS, BIM and visualization and animation

Transformation technologies – Augmented reality will become personalized and contextualized. – Wearable computing devices, sensors, smart phones, and tablets can be expected. – Maps will need to change to full 3D with rendering, and alive from multiple sensors and dynamic – Structural collection, Web indices, crowd sourcing, machine learning are developments in the digital world. – Computing will involve multiple nodes extending to billions of fully connected nodes, – An end-to-end approach - from sensor, acquisition of data to user experience.

Consequences of transformations The new multi station instrumentation can do everything a survey instrument can do only faster Aerial imaging can now capture 40,000 km 2 per day Imaging systems can achieve 3D data at 200 to 300 points/m 2. Aerial lidar systems will acquire up to 100 points/m 2

Consequences of transformations UAV or UAS will significantly change the way we collect data Vision systems on machines and cars can work much faster than humans GA says Australia will require 1.2 petabytes of data by 2015 to support government programs, Satellite data compiled as data cubes CPD will be essential for SSSI professionals

CPD services to professionals SSSI provides CPD opportunities to members and non-members Seminars, workshops, webinars, conferences. The Annual SSSI conference will now involve the majority of surveying and spatial organizations A separate company is being formed between SSSI and SIBA to manage future conferences

Joint conference participating organizations SSSI SIBA PSMA ANZLIC ASIERA The Commonwealth CRC-SI LINZ

Spatial information - benefits GIS is ‘the great enabler’ Mapping and spatial problem solving are becoming more ubiquitous in society 80% to 85% of community decisions involve information about positions. ACIL Tasman report: The economic footprint of the spatial information industry in Australia in 2006-7 was between $6.43 billion and $12.57 billion in GDP − equivalent to 0.6% and 1.2% of GDP Cost/benefits of GNSS and other geospatial data variously quoted as 4 to 6 times The surveying and spatial industries provide considerable benefits to society

Negative developments in spatial data manipulation Spatial data constraints reduce their impacts by 5% to 15% because of the lack of fundamental data and finding the right data Has the development in the OSP Foundation Spatial Data Framework (ie SDI) taken too long? It seems we have been talking about this for about 20 years

Negative developments in spatial data manipulation - ACIL Tasman report says SDI has been a mechanism for innovation and efficiencies in the supply chain Progressed only as far as discoverable and accessed data Not Shared - geospatial needs, strategies, goals, value-added services, and innovation processes and operational objectives We need to learn from the negative effects of past policies

Steps to professional transformation Some Job descriptions in Surveying and Spatial Sciences – Land Surveyor – Engineering and Mine Surveyor – Hydrographic surveyor – Cartographer – Various levels from GIS Director to GIS User (URISA) – Remote Sensing Scientists, Technologists and Technician What are your ambitions? How can you progress in your career?

Steps to professional transformation (adapted from Audacium http://audacium.com/about-audacium/http://audacium.com/about-audacium/ Take an objective look at your situation Accept guidance and support Chart out your life plan – Your core values, ambitions, fears – Your beliefs as they relate to my current and ideal situations – Objectively evaluate your talents and skills – What are your financial needs – How much time do you have to make the change – Identify your turn-offs and avoid them

Steps to professional transformation (adapted from Audacium http://audacium.com/about-audacium/ )http://audacium.com/about-audacium/ Define your view of money and social status Beware your inner critic and lack of confidence Give yourself time Keep you plan in focus Accept opportunities when they arise words of Steve Jobs, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards” words of Steve Jobs
