European Research Council Overview of Opportunities FP7 – European Research Council Funds: A Principal Investigator (PI) and (if necessary) team members to do frontier research No nationality or mobility requirements. PI must be based in an EU Member State or Associated Country. Research areas: Bottom-up, across all fields of research, on the basis of scientific excellence. Project types: Starting Grants (PI normally 2-7yrs from PhD, up to €2m over 5 yrs) Consolidator Grants (PI normally 7-12yrs from PhD, up to €2.75m over 5 yrs) Advanced Grants (For leading investigators, up to €3.5m over 5 yrs) Synergy Grants (new) (2-4 PIs, up to €15m over 6 yrs) Proof of Concept (new, existing ERC grant holders only) Co-ordination and Support Actions

Advantages Bottom-up Funding for PI and team (usually at one location) No requirement to move Resubmission possible (subject to resubmission rules) Disadvantages Very competitive - only suitable for researchers with an outstanding track record European Research Council Advantages and Disadvantages FP7 – European Research Council

Training and mobility is key In order to assess eligibility (for project or fellowship), it is essential that you consider the following: The minimum or maximum amount of research experience stipulated for the action: Two definitions of researchers: Early Stage Researcher: 0-4 years from obtaining degree that qualified them to embark on a doctorate Experienced Researchers: in possession of a PhD/at least 4 years research experience (FTE) The transnational mobility requirements for the action: usually the researcher must not have been resident in host country for more than 12 months in the last 3 years immediately before application deadline / date of recruitment or secondment) FP7 People / Marie Curie Actions

Marie Curie Actions Overview: Marie Curie Actions + Co-Fund, Researchers Night Host ActionsIndividual Actions (For “Experienced Researchers” only) Initial Training Networks (ITN) Including: Innovative Doctoral Programmes (new) European Industrial Doctorates (new) Industry Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES) Intra-European Fellowships Incoming International Fellowships Outgoing International Fellowships Career Integration Grants FP7 People / Marie Curie Actions

ITNs – overview of 3 modes FP7 – Marie Curie - ITN

Individual Fellowships Intra-EuropeanInternational IncomingInternational Outgoing Researchers based in the EU or Associated Country Researchers based in third countries For EU Member State or Associated Country nationals* 12 – 24 months in an EU Member State or Associated Country 12 – 24 months incoming phase in EU Member State/Associated Country 24 – 36 months with 12 – 24 months in third country followed by mandatory reintegration phase in European host institution Attaining or strengthening professional independence and skills diversification Mutually beneficial research co-operation and knowledge sharing Acquiring new knowledge in the third country – bringing it back to the MS/AC Can be resuming a career in research Possible 1 year reintegration grant for nationals from ICPCs (€15,000) Mandatory return phase of 1 year * PLUS non-nationals in MS/AC for more than five years at deadline FP7 – Marie Curie – Individual Fellowships

Support a research project of 2 – 4 years Contributes to the research costs Supports integration into research career in Europe To provide those taking up stable post with own research budget Should enable transfer of knowledge and building of links with country from which researcher has moved No requirement to have benefited from MC previously Must comply with mobility rule Host commits to employ researcher for at least duration of project €25,000 per year flat rate funding Career Integration Grants FP7 – Marie Curie – Career Integration Grant

Advantages Bottom-up Reasonable success rates and can resubmit High funding levels Can get funding for one fellow Can get funding for PhD students (or researchers at a similar level) Funding to work with industry (and only 2 partners needed) Funding to build partnerships with institutions outside Europe Can use to fund fellows coming to you Disadvantages Have to move country if you do an individual fellowship Marie Curie Actions Advantages and Disadvantages FP7 People / Marie Curie Actions
