2 What is the Florida State Assessment?  The *NEW* Florida State Standards call for a new assessment.  The FSA will show whether or not a student is mastering the new standards.  State Standardized Test for ELA and Math

3 What are the Dates? READING: -SESSION 1: MARCH 29 -SESSION 2: MARCH 30 MATH: -SESSION 1: MARCH 31 -SESSION 2: APRIL 1

4 How will the test affect my child? The FSA exam is ONE of the 2 known opportunities for promotion to fourth grade.

5 3 rd Grade Reading Portfolio  Currently being administered in Mrs. Mesadieu’s and Mrs. Gallardo’s classes  All 3 rd grade students complete a portfolio  Focuses on informational passages  Meets criteria established by the FLDOE (Florida Department of Education)  Represents the 2 nd opportunity for a student to be promoted to 4 th grade  Students must demonstrate mastery of ALL the standards

10 How can I prepare my child for the FSA? Use Technology (Reading Plus/Mathletics) Read together EVERY night Ask you child questions. Make sure your child is using TEXT EVIDENCE. Review multiplication and division tables.

11 How are we helping your child?  FSA Tutoring program  Differentiated Instruction  Modeling and sharing activities to practice the skills  Students use RAC ( R estate the question, A nswer the question, C ite your evidence) writing strategies and math strategies.

12 English Language Arts (ELA) Tips- What to do with your child  Consistent reading every night. 20 -30 minutes of Reading per day! ANY Reading is good!  Ask about what they are Reading  Ask them to explain their homework  Focus on vocabulary in context.  Make sure they are practicing reading at home using Reading Plus.

14 Multiple Choice Item Example  How are the settings of “Little Pepito Holds Up the Sky” and “Sulka Saves the Savanna” different? a. One takes place on a savanna, and the other takes place in a town. b. One takes place around rocks and trees, and the other takes place in a dark forest. c. One takes place in the mountains, and the other takes place in a savanna. d. One takes place on high grasslands, and the other takes place in a low valet.

15 Multi-Select Items For these items, choose more than one correct answer from the answer choices, and fill in the bubbles for more than one correct answer. Be sure to read the item carefully to know how many correct answers to choose.

16 Graphic Response Items  For these items, enter the response by drawing lines between matching words or phrases. Drawing lines is the correct way to enter the answer ONLY for the items that ask to do this.

17 Editing Tasks  For editing items, choose the correct word or phrase to fill in each blank in a passage.  For each blank, fill in the bubble before the correct word or phrase.  If they write their answer in the blank but do not fill in the bubble, their answer will not be scored.

18 Two-Part Items  For these items they are to enter their response to two related questions.  The two parts of the item may be either multiple-choice (one correct answer) or multi- select (more than one correct answer, so they have to be sure to read the item carefully to know how many correct answers to choose.

19 Question Types Math  Ask students to show their work.  Students should be able to explain how they arrived at the final answer.  Students should closely read all word problems to better understand the task.  Students should underline or circle key words and numbers in words problems.  Help students follow these steps:  What I need to find?  What information do I need to use?  How will I use the information?  Solve the problems  Explain your answer.

21 Multi-select Items  For these items, they’ll choose more than one correct answer from the answer choices, and fill in the bubbles for more than one correct answer. They have to be sure to read the item carefully

22 Equation Items  For these items, they’ll write their response in the box provided. Writing the response is the correct way to enter their answer ONLY for the items that tell them to do this.

23 Two-Part Equation Items  Some equation items have two parts.  For a two-part equation item, such as the one to the right, they must be sure to enter their answer for each part of the item.

24 What do I do… Make sure your child gets enough sleep. The Night Before the FSA? Eat a normal breakfast. Talk to your child. Arrive at school early. The Morning of the FSA?
