12 The Atlantic Control of the Atlantic Ocean was vitally important for supplies for the Allied powers Germany initially had strong control After the Allied forces cracked the German code, they were able to turn the tides This ensured a well-supplied Allied force along with an increase in their production abilities

16 The Pacific Early months saw many victories for the Japanese Fierce fighting spirit (soldiers instead of bullets) American Troops forced to surrender Philippines April 1942 US under MacArthur 70,000 troops forced on Bataan Death March to a prison camp: death of 600 Americans and 10,000 Filipinos Battle of Coral Sea May 1942 = 1 st time that Japanese advance had been stopped, yet still hurt the Americans more than the Japanese TURNING POINT: Battle of Midway June 1942 Americans broke the Japanese code and knew their attack plans 4 Japanese aircraft carriers were sunk Turned the tide and brought the new tactic of “Island-Hopping” Battle of Guadalcanal: vicious fighting with Japanese eventually leaving the island in Feb. 1943 Battle of Leyte Gulf Oct 1944- Kamikaze fighter pilots/ US victory with a reclamation of the Philippines
