Key Figures 36 months (1 st May 2011 – 30 th April 2014) 400.000 documents: -Books -Manuscripts -Pictures, postcards -Maps, prints, posters, -Leaflets, music, … 107 collections 107 collections will be provided within this project to Europeana Rybinsk State Museum (Russia) (308) Via Linked Heritage Russian State Library (Moscow) (250) University Library of Osnabrück (3000)

6 6 Enlargement of the network Gallica HOPE Structural cooperation between three European Digitization Projects dedicated to WWI with the goal to set up a thematic portal dedicated to the Great War Europeana will pick up some WWI content already available in Europeana, coming from… Joining the network stays possible till end October 2013 !

9 What do we want? A single portal dedicated to WW1 which would offer access to user-generated content and content from institutions Answer to the search and browsing needs of researchers and local and family historians Offer curated metadata according to the specificities of the domain Offer diversity of material (image, text, sound, video) How to achieve a result at European level ? With the help of TEL & Europeana technical teams who designed the portal prototype and specified special metadata requirements Set up of a huge thematic portal dedicated to the Great War

14 What do we want? A single portal dedicated to WW1 which would offer access to user- generated content and content from institutions Answer to the search and browsing needs of researchers and local and family historians Offer curated metadata according to the specificities of the domain Offer diversity of material (image, text, sound, video) What do we need? A unique anchor to integrate items from the Europeana portal to the thematic portal via the API More visibility on the web : LCSH World War, 1914-1918 Dbpedia http://dbpedia.org/page/World_War_Ihttp://dbpedia.org/page/World_War_I Multilingual terminologies

15 Subjects: LCSH Provision LCSH literate LCSH identifier LCSH identifier LINK example: World War, 1914-1918 sh85148236 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85148236 It is not yet possible for TEL or Europeana to display the id into a literate word, but they are working on it Link to the LOC site is not mandatory but makes the job for TEL and Europeana easier Multilingual terminologies

16 Object types book Film Peinture EC1418 project has provided TEL with a table of mandatory and optional object types with translation in all represented languages within the project.table TEL is able to translate the object types if partners provide only information in local languages or in English Multilingual terminologies

17 DBpedia Subject “World War I” as identifier to pick up WWI material from Europeana Each metadata record must contain at least one dc:subject based on DBpedia http://dbpedia.org/page/World_War_I. http://dbpedia.org/page/World_War_I Data providers must select the rdfs:label in the language of their choice. (This subject information will be also used for indexing in Google.) The list proposed by DBpedia contains the following labels: Primera Guerra Mundial První světová válka World War I Erster Weltkrieg… Multilingual terminologies

If some language is not represented at DBpedia, partners has to indicate the DBpedia subject in English Importance to provide Language attributes in each subject and object field Metadata provided in different languages: the language used must be indicated in a xml:lang attribute: Vie de tranchée Trench Life</dc:subject Multilingual terminologies
