23 National Institutes of Health In addition, NIH has developed a decommissioning protocol for hazardous substance assessment and remediation, that can be used during deconstruction activities by federal and state agencies, universities, and other facilities across the country. The waste reduction activities included the removal and recycling of the following: 14,000 mercury-containing fluorescent lamps 2,800 lb of mercury-containing debris and other waste materials 22,000 lb of ballast materials, some of which contained PCBs 5,800 tons of non-hazardous debris, such as concrete and scrap metal For more details of this wonderful effort, I invite you to attend Breakout Session 2.7
