Mr C Johnston ICT Teacher www.computechedu.co.uk BTEC IT Unit 09 - Lesson 09 Network Services

Session Objectives Know services provided by different network systems and the benefits which they offer to business and other organisations.

Network Services Network servers provide a range of different services for users on a network, Network services are spilt into 4 categories: Directory services Telecommunication services File services Application services You need to be able to describe a wide range of services from each category and consider how business operations would benefit from them.

Directory Services Used to management network resources Domain control, Database of all network resources (users, printers, clients, servers), DNS, DHCP Account management, User groups, User accounts, Policies Authentication management, E-commerce and secure webpages, Secure WAN connections, Routers, servers, switches and proxies, Wireless systems

Communication Services Allows the network to communicate with the outside world in a number of different ways using the internet Communication email, internet relay chat (IRC), VoIP, discussion boards Remote access via mobiles, remote desktop, social networking

File Services Allows the users on the network to share a range of different files from documents to media files and applications, File transfer (FTP) File sharing File restrictions (what files can save in area) Quotas

Application Services Resources which are used, by users on a networks – could be hardware or software based. Application software Shared databases, Web, Proxy Shared resources Printing, Scanner, Storage space, Voice over IP (VoIP), Mobile working, Authentication eg users, hardware

Evidencing P5 / D2 Produce a leaflet for VeNew which describes the typical services provided by networks. Consider within the leaflet how their business operations would benefit from them. [P5] Produce a second leaflet which evaluates the typical services available from a network operating system directory service. Remember to include both advantages and disadvantages of each service and how VeNew can utilise each. [D2] BTEC Book – Unit 09 p19-29

Programming Constructs For P5 you need to describe typical services provided on a network and consider how businesses may benefit from them. To achieve distinction you are required to evaluate the typical services available from a network operating system, directory service in the context of VeNew. P5 – Describe typical services provided by networks D2 – Evaluate typical services available from a network operating system directory service. P5 – Describe typical services provided by networks D2 – Evaluate typical services available from a network operating system directory service.

For Each Specific Service Overview the service… what is it? What is it for?? What specific tasks does the service allow users / administrators / the organisation (veNew) to do? What benefits does the service offer to users / administrators / the organisation (veNew)? If struggling with benefits then think of alternative ways of doing what the services allows to be done and what are the negatives of doing it that way – could these be benefits of using the network service?
