Fun activities to develop the fine motor skills preschoolers need for school success!
Teachers know how important it is to develop children’s fine motor skills as a stepping stone to future learning, and Mighty Fine Motor Fun provides you with the tools and information you need to teach fine motor skills to children ages 3 to 5.

4. Fine Motor Development
Definition
Fine motor refers to skills in eye-hand coordination.
Educators have identified 6 basic actions.
Reaching-Moving arms forward to grasp or touch an object.
Grasping-Using fingers to get an object into hand.
Carrying-Using hand to move an object from one place to another place.

5. Fine Motor Development
Releasing-Letting go of an object held in hand.
In-hand manipulation-Using fingers to adjust an object inside hand.
Bilateral hand use-Using two hands together in an activity.

6. Fine Motor Development
Preschoolers develop fine motor skills through play with appropriate materials and objects. Preschoolers also learn through repetition and experimentation.
Let’s look at several specific activities we have identified which promote fine motor development in year olds.

Procedure
Provide paper, stamps, and markers for the child.
Demonstrate how to use a marker to color the stamp rather than using the ink pad.
Invite child to explore different methods of using stamps to make art.

This is an activity to do with two or more children.
Set out the playdough and small objects for the children to explore.
Suggest that one child “hide” some of the objects inside the playdough.
Ask another child to “find” the objects that the first child hid.

Procedure
Cut paper into single pieces (instead of folded), so they are easier for children to manipulate.
Demonstrate the proper way to hold and cut with scissors. Give child verbal cues, such as “Thumb on top!” or “Open, close, open, close.”
Invite child to cut paper with scissors.
Help the child to hold scissors correctly, if necessary.
