3 Fine Motor Development Workshop
Resource book: “Mighty Fine Motor Fun”, Christy Isbell Ph.D., Gryphon House Fun activities to develop the fine motor skills preschoolers need for school success! Teachers know how important it is to develop children’s fine motor skills as a stepping stone to future learning, and Mighty Fine Motor Fun provides you with the tools and information you need to teach fine motor skills to children ages 3 to 5.

4 Fine Motor Development
Definition Fine motor refers to skills in eye-hand coordination. Educators have identified 6 basic actions. Reaching-Moving arms forward to grasp or touch an object. Grasping-Using fingers to get an object into hand. Carrying-Using hand to move an object from one place to another place.

5 Fine Motor Development
Releasing-Letting go of an object held in hand. In-hand manipulation-Using fingers to adjust an object inside hand. Bilateral hand use-Using two hands together in an activity.

6 Fine Motor Development
Preschoolers develop fine motor skills through play with appropriate materials and objects. Preschoolers also learn through repetition and experimentation. Let’s look at several specific activities we have identified which promote fine motor development in year olds.

7 Fine Motor Development
Grasping Objective The child will improve grasp of small objects. The child will increase finger strength. Materials Paper Stamps Washable inkpads Large washable markers

8 Fine Motor Development
Grasping Procedure Provide paper, stamps, and markers for the child. Demonstrate how to use a marker to color the stamp rather than using the ink pad. Invite child to explore different methods of using stamps to make art.

9 Fine Motor Development
Grasping Giant Shapes Stamps 3 years & up. Introduce shapes with this set of 10 geometric shapes stamps. The 3" diameter stamps include a hexagon, circle, rectangle, square, triangle, rhombus, octagon, trapezoid, pentagon and quadrilateral all contained in a reusable, clear plastic case for easy storage.

10 Fine Motor Development
Grasping Jumbo Stamp Pads Jumbo ink pads have brilliant washable inks. Includes 9 stamp pads in red, yellow, green, blue, purple, baby blue, pink, orange, and white. All the colors your child will need to have a stamping good time!

11 Fine Motor Development
Grasping Classic Colors Washable Markers Crayola® Classic color markers wash from skin and most fabrics, inviting creativity and reducing clean-up.

12 Fine Motor Development
Hand Strength Objective The children will develop hand strength. The children will improve finger coordination. Materials Playdough Small objects

13 Fine Motor Development
Hand Strength Procedure This is an activity to do with two or more children. Set out the playdough and small objects for the children to explore. Suggest that one child “hide” some of the objects inside the playdough. Ask another child to “find” the objects that the first child hid.

14 Fine Motor Development
Hand Strength Play-Doh Modeling Compound - 4 Pack I It's everyone's favorite at modeling time... pliable, soft, non-toxic dough in 4 colors. (colors may vary from picture) 4 pack-5 ounce containers with lids.

15 Fine Motor Development
Hand Strength Farm Animals Math & Sort Grades Pre K & up. Sort farm animals by name, use in graphing activities, make a matching game or simply count the different animals. The plastic tub contains 144 manipulatives in a variety of farm animals. Stores in its own tub for easy access.

16 Fine Motor Development
Pre-Scissor Skills/Tweezer Pick-Up Objectives The child will practice opening and closing tools. The child will build strength and coordination in hands. Materials Tweezers Small objects of varying colors for sorting. Various color containers

17 Fine Motor Development
Pre-Scissor Skills/Tweezer Pick-Up Procedure Show the child how to use tweezers to pick up small objects. Encourage the child to use the tweezers to place objects into containers by color etc.

18 Fine Motor Development
Pre-Scissor Skills/Tweezer Pick-Up Fine Motor Count and Sort 3 years & up. Develop classifying, sorting, counting, and fine motor skills with this deluxe kit. Contains 6 durable fabric sorting boxes, 120 sorting bears, 12 easy grip tweezers, and activity guide.

19 Fine Motor Development
Scissor Skills/Card Cutting Procedure Cut paper into single pieces (instead of folded), so they are easier for children to manipulate. Demonstrate the proper way to hold and cut with scissors. Give child verbal cues, such as “Thumb on top!” or “Open, close, open, close.” Invite child to cut paper with scissors. Help the child to hold scissors correctly, if necessary.

20 Fine Motor Development
