2 What is a cover letter? introduces you and your resume to potential employers or organizations you seek to join First document employer sees, often the first impression you make. Explain your experiences in a story-like format that works with the information provided in your resume Allow you to go in-depth about important experiences/skills and relate them to job requirements Show the employer that you are individualizing (tailoring) this job application Provide a sample of your written communication skills

3 Cover Letter Components Explain why you are sending a resume. Be specific: Do you want a summer internship opportunity, or a permanent position at graduation; are you inquiring about future employment possibilities? Tell specifically how you learned about the position or the organization a flyer posted in your department, a web site, a family friend Ok to mention the name of who suggested that you write. Convince the reader to look at your resume. well written and targeted to that employer. Call attention to elements of your background education, leadership, experience relevant to position youre seeking. use examples.

Box Address City, State Zip Code Dear Mr./Ms./Dr. LastName: Opening paragraph: State why you are writing; how you learned of the organization or position, and basic information about yourself. 2nd paragraph: Tell why you are interested in the employer or type of work the employer does (Simply stating that you are interested does not tell why, and can sound like a form letter). Demonstrate that you know enough about the employer or position to relate your background to the employer or position. Mention specific qualifications which make you a good fit for the employer’s needs. This is an opportunity to explain in more detail relevant items in your resume. Refer to the fact that your resume is enclosed. Mention other enclosures if such are required to apply for a position. 3rd paragraph: Indicate that you would like the opportunity to interview for a position or to talk with the employer to learn more about their opportunities or hiring plans. State what you will do to follow up, such as telephone the employer within two weeks. If you will be in the employer’s location and could offer to schedule a visit, indicate when. State that you would be glad to provide the employer with any additional information needed. Thank the employer for her/his consideration. 9 Resume Components Contact information Place your name, address, telephone number, and email address at the top of the resume. Your name should be the most obvious component of your resume. Job Objective The objective appears near the top of your resume and tells the reader about your career goals and/or expresses interest in a specific job or vacancy. gives direction and focus to your resume. Experience, Employment Summary List employment, in reverse chronological order. Include your title, name and location of employer and dates of employment, usually by year not by month.

10 Resume Components Education educational credentials should be prominent on your resume. Mention not only degrees, but also any honors or special awards that you've achieved. Include courses or projects that might be relevant for employers. Also include your GPA if it is 3.0 or higher. Leave out high school information once you are halfway through college. Skills, Accomplishments Describe accomplishments/skills you have acquired through work experience, academic background, extracurricular/community/volunteer activities. should relate to the occupation and setting you want to enter. Activities optional section, can list campus activities, as well as job-related professional, humanitarian, or other groups.

11 Resume Components Recognition and Awards any formal recognition or awards that support your job objective Certifications and Licenses include professional credentials at the top of the resume with your education. References Three is a good Attach references including the person's name, title, organization, email address, and telephone number. list references as part of your resume or include them on a separate page

If you include this section it should be a sentence or two about your employment goals. A customized objective that describes why you are the perfect candidate for the job can help your resume stand out from the competition. Career Highlights / Qualifications (optional) A customized section of your resume that lists key achievements, skills, traits, and experience relevant to the position for which you are applying can serve dual purposes. It highlights your relevant experience and lets the prospective employer know that you have taken the time to create a resume that shows how you are qualified for the job. Experience This section of your resume includes your work history. List the companies you worked for, dates of employment, the positions you held and a bulleted list of responsibilities and achievements.

College, Degree Awards, Honors Skills Include skills related to the position / career field that you are applying for i.e. computer skills, language skills. References available upon request There is no need to include references on your resume. Rather, have a separate list of references to give to employers upon request.
