Presentation modified and prepared by Alice Finch 2013 3rd Grade April Art Project West Mercer Elementary Art Enrichment Program

2 How this PowerPoint Works
Some of the slides in this presentation are hidden. (The slide number has a box and slash through it.) A hidden slide will not be shown in ‘slide show’ mode. It is visible and can be edited etc. in ‘normal’ mode. You can change modes on the view tab or with the icons in the lower right corner. Some of the slides have notes. These notes contain more detailed information that will be helpful in understanding the background of an artist or talking points for a slide. If you would like view or print this presentation with the notes, use the ‘notes page’ on the view tab or on the print menu.

3 Lesson Overview 1 Lesson: Shape Medium: Paper Collage
Time: minutes Curriculum Tie: Geometry Project Overview: Look at shapes in art and how they are used to create objects. Students will learn about an ancient Chinese puzzle, made up of 7 geometric shapes, called a Tangram. They will experiment with these shapes to make a square and other designs. Vocabulary Geometric- a relationship of lines, angles, points, and shapes Tangram- an ancient Chinese puzzle made up of 7 geometric shapes that can be formed into other designs and shapes. The 7 shapes fit into a square Cubism- the subject of the artwork is transformed into a sequence of planes, lines, and arcs. Print Suggestions 123.1 Still Life with fruit basket 118.6 The enamel saucepan 120 Lemons and oranges

4 Cubism & Tangrams Materials Needed
7 piece tangram square- use die cut in workroom to make one per student, use a variety of colors Construction paper cut in half (9x12)- select 3 or 4 colors as background, half sheet per student Tangram pattern papers- 6 copies of 5 different ones Glue stick Crayons

5 Today’s Project What is a geometric shape? Cubist art of Pablo Picasso
Tangrams

6 Pablo Picasso 1881-1971 Born in Spain
He painted in many different styles When he was 25, he started painting with simplified, geometric shapes Style became known as Cubism

7 Picasso Background Pablo Picasso (25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and stage designer who spent most of his adult life in France. As one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, he is widely known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), and Guernica (1937), a portrayal of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Analytic cubism (1909–1912) is a style of painting Picasso developed along with Georges Braque using monochrome brownish and neutral colors. Both artists took apart objects and "analyzed" them in terms of their shapes. Picasso and Braque’s paintings at this time have many similarities. Synthetic cubism (1912–1919) was a further development of the genre, in which cut paper fragments – often wallpaper or portions of newspaper pages – were pasted into compositions, marking the first use of collage in fine art. Self Portrait and Mandolin and Guitar

8 What makes these paintings cubist?
What do you see? Simplified shapes Triangular flowers Simple, solid colors What do you think the titles are? Lemons and Oranges Still life with fruit basket

9 What makes this cubist? What do you see?
People Bench Clarinet Guitar Sheet music What do you think the title is? The Three Musicians

10 Tangrams in Art Tangrams can be used to represent something geometrically Tangram Abstract World Map Each country is represented by a unique shape from all 7 tangram pieces Map by DM9JaymeSyfu

11 7 shapes = many possibilities
2 big triangles 1 medium triangle 2 small triangles 1 parallelogram 1 square

12 Step 1- Make some shapes Use the colored pattern guides to make some shapes Animals Birds People x2 Buildings Make a few from at least 2 different pattern guides Each pattern requires all 7 shapes

13 Step 2- Choose a pattern Choose a favorite pattern from the ones you’ve tried or make up one of your own Arrange it on a background paper Glue it down

14 Step 3- Add in details With the pen, pencil, or crayons, add in details to your design Facial features Landscape
