Meiosis

What is it? A special type of cell division of the reproductive cells – egg and sperm Meiosis is similar to which other cell division? Mitosis

- The Cell and Inheritance Meiosis During meiosis, the chromosome pairs separate and are distributed to 4 different cells. The resulting sex cells have only half as many chromosomes as the other cells in the organism. How many chromosomes is that? Which stage is in the picture? Prophase 23 chromosomes

Meiosis I

Meiosis II

What are the 5 main differences between Meiosis and Mitosis? 1.Meiosis involves reproductive cells only Mitosis involves all cell types except: Red Blood cells Nerve cells 2. In Meiosis there are 2 cell divisions Mitosis there is only 1 cell division of each cell 3. In Meiosis the reproductive cells only have 23 chromosomes not the usual 46 or 23 pairs

What are the 5 main differences between Meiosis and Mitosis? 4. At end of Mitosis there are 2 daughter cells, in Meiosis there are 4 cells ( 4 sperms or 4 eggs) 5. In Mitosis, the 2 daughter cells are genetically identical In Meiosis, the 4 cells (4 sperms or 4 eggs) end up being genetically different

Mitosis Both Meiosis Mitosis Both Meiosis Only one cell division Two cells are produced Daughter cells are genetically identical to mother cell Two cell divisions Four cells are produced Sperm and eggs cells are genetically different from original (mother cell) Follow the steps of cell cycle Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Cytokinesis Daughter cells have 46 chromosomes or 23 pairs Egg and sperm cells only have 23 chromosomes Cell division of reproductive cells only, sperm and egg cells Cell division of all body cells except: RBC’s, nerve cells and reproductive cells Differences and similarities between Mitosis and Meiosis

Review Questions 1. What are the two sex cells called? Answer: Egg and sperm cell How many chromosomes do humans have? Answer: 46 chromosomes or 23 pairs 3. What is the “Chromosome Theory of Inheritance”? Answer: Genes are carried from parents to their offspring on chromosomes 4. Explain what is Meiosis? Answer: Cell division of reproductive cells where the number of chromosomes in each sex cell is reduced to half or 23 chromosomes

5. How many cell divisions take place during Meiosis? Answer: 2 cell divisions 6. What are these cell divisions called? Answer: Meiosis I and Meiosis II
