06/06/2016Mitosis L.O: To understand mitosis and describe where it occurs Starter: How old are you? How old are you really?

Starter: match up the genetics terms Key Words: Chromosome, Gene, Nucleus, Asexual, Sexual, DNA 06/06/2016

Each gene is made of a section of DNA DNA is made from base pairs 06/06/2016

How many chromosomes does a human have? Different animals have a different number of chromosomes. A Shrimp has 260 (130 pairs)! A mosquito only has 6 (3 pairs)! 06/06/2016

Some facts: - Made up of paired bases - The base pairs are made up of different combinations from four bases - The instructions are in the form of a code - The base pairs are grouped in 3s which codes for 1 amino acid (the order represents the type of amino acid) A string or amino acids will make proteins - Contain instructions on what a cell does, how the organism should work etc How genes work Use this information to complete the worksheet

1.Where are new cells grown in your body? 2.Why do you need them? 3.How do they know how to make new cells? Skin, blood, muscle, fat ………….The list goes on and on – new cells are made all the time. Why? Growth and to replace worn out or damaged cells. Every nucleus contains DNA which contains instructions to make new cells 06/06/2016

Cell division Cell division Growth, repair and replacement of body cells. Production of specialized sex cells. New cells are needed for two main reasons, so there are two different types of cell division… New cells are produced by old cells dividing. Why are new cells needed? …mitosis and meiosis. Interesting fact: An adult human is made up of about 50 billion cells. That’s 50 000 000 000 000 cells!

These pictures show cell division. Can you work out the order? 06/06/2016 A B C D E

What is mitosis? What is mitosis? Each new daughter cell has a full set of chromosomes and is identical to the parent cell. Mitosis begins with a single cell. (containing chromosome pairs) First the cell makes a copy of each chromosome… original cell 2 new cells …then it divides. cell division Did you know strawberry plants reproduce using mitosis (asexually)

06/06/2016 Now look at some of the prepared slides of cell division, see if you can identify what is happening in them. Draw a picture and write a sentence to explain what you can see

Copy and fill in the gaps Mitosis is a process used during growth and ________ reproduction. Each chromosome in the original cell makes an ________ copy of itself. When this type of division is complete, _______ daughter cells are produced, each having the same chromosome number as the _________ cell. 06/06/2016
