What were the underlying causes of World War I?

Bomb Notes Causes of World War I Imperialism- a nation’s attempt to gain control of weaker nations. European nations divided much of Africa into colonies in order to obtain raw materials and markets to sell manufactured goods

Colonial Africa before WW I

Europeans nations forced China to grant them trading rights and developed Spheres of Influence where they had exclusive trading rights

Europeans not in Central and South America due to Monroe Doctrine where U.S. agreed to stay out of European conflicts in exchange for Europeans staying out of Central and South America. Some colonies there but no new ones.

Militarism- a nation’s policy to maintain strong armed forces. Glorification of war and increased military spending. Ex: Great Britain and Germany raced to have the largest navies France, Russia, and Germany competed in building powerful armies.

Nationalism- two types 1.extreme loyalty to a nation and concern for its welfare 2.aspiring to become one’s own new nation Many nationalist groups existed in the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires. There actions led to start of WW I.

Alliance System- the formation of military agreements among nations. A web of treaties developed that required that once even a small war started they all had to go to war. “The Spark” of the war was the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand
