1 SELF-START  To begin class today, please turn in your Chapter 6 People, Places, and Vocabulary on the front table.  While you are there please pick up The Mormon Movement, take it to your desk and QUIETLY complete it. You are welcome to use your book but NO TALKING. I will collect your SELF-STARTS in 5 minutes.

3 I. Why do we talk about Mormons? A. Utah would have gone unsettled for a very long time if Mormons had not decided to settle here. B. Mormons play a major role in Utah history and still play a huge role in society today

4 II. Mormon Background A. “Mormon” was a nickname 1. Smith called themselves Mormons because they believed in the Book of Mormon 2. Non-believers called them Mormon as an insult to show that they did not follow Jesus Christ but Mormon 3. When the church is first organized as the Church of Christ and is later changed to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

5 II. Mormon Background B. Joseph Smith found the Mormon church in New York in the early 1830’s C. Mormons live in many places between 1830 and 1847 1. New York–Palmyra 2. Ohio—Kirtland 2. Missouri— Independence 3. Illinois—Nauvoo 4. Utah

6 Mormon Background C. Ohio – Kirkland (1830) the Mormons move here to build a temple but go bankrupt and decide to join another group who live in Missouri. Missouri – Independence (1831-1838) they are seen as “strange” and don’t like slavery in a slave state. In 1838, Governor Boggs orders extermination order Illinois – Nauvoo (1839-1846) lots of Mormons gather here and it becomes the largest city in Illinois 1. Many converts are coming from around the world and giving up a lot 2. Converts’ homes and farms start to get burned and tormented 2. Nauvoo Expositor (newspaper) fire and many believe Mormons did it 3. Joseph Smith jailed and killed – died as a martyr

7 III. Persecution – harassment or causing people to suffer because of their beliefs a. Each place Mormons moved in the United States they were persecuted b. Bill of Rights guarantees the freedom of religion Why were Mormons persecuted in so many different places?
