APPLICATIONS FOR AIR REGENERATION, BIOCIDE WATER MANAGEMENT AND MINISWITCH FOR ENERGY CONTENT Institute of Chemical Methodologies-National Research Council of Italy Via Salaria Km. 29,300-00015 Monterotondo-Rome ornella.ursini@imc.cnr.it giancarlo.angelini@imc.cnr.it Ornella Ursini, Giancarlo Angelini ISLSWG WORKSHOP BIOREGENERATIVE LIFE SUPPORT Turin, 18-19 May 2015

Air and water filtration management technologies Regenerable Laminar flow device effective in removing completely most of the chemical warfare agents (Pat. PCT WO2010/128534A1 ) and VOC 2 Extraction of Specific Chemical Contaminants in the air from Closed Loop Environments (ESA Project): regenerable filtration with selective desorbtion Biocide analysis Investigation on wetted surface materials with SEM analysis, X-ray fluorescence and Atomic force microscopy Miniaturized Thermal Switch

Institute of Chemical Methodologies WHO WE ARE Chemistry and Radiochemistry for the Development of Products and Processes Responsible: Dr. Ornella Ursini

WHAT WE DO Chemistry and Radiochemistry for the Development of Products and Processes Radiation Chemistry. Effects of ionizing radiations on: Material, Chemical compound, Biological molecule (aminoacids adsorbed on porous) Vegetable systems Environmental Chemistry. Diagnostics and technologies: -Abatement of pollutant and pathogen in water and indoor, -Abatement of VOC level from waste apparatous, -Chelating materials for adsorption of pollutants in water Green Chemistry. Sustainable chemical processes: Applied to plant crops, Exploitation of waste vegetable materials Chemistry. Physical-chemical characterization of: Process, Product, Special material, Metabolite Biological molecule

2011- ESA Project- Extraction of specific chemical contaminants in the air Melissa: more than 100 VOC at total 140 ppm We selected as rapresentative of different classes of compounds: Ethanol Carbon disulfide Tetrahydrofuran 2-methyl-2-butene Iso-propylamine Toluene Our Melissa simulator He 30mL/min, 2°/min vacuum, 8°/min Internal diameter 3 mm, tube length 30cm. collection efficiency > 95% for gases with D=0.28 cm2/ s, flow rates 1 L/min This simple filtering based on diffusion can last 19 days at a flow rate of 2 mL/min before the BTV of the less eluted compound is reached. Simple No CO2 and H2O retaining Use of different adsorp.materials High break-through volumes No head pressure Two systems in parallel Easy releasing Easy regeneration
