Welsh Emblems

The Welsh Daffodil

Facts about the Welsh Daffodil 1 - The national flower of Wales is the daffodil. People think it was chosen as our national flower because the name daffodil is similar to the name David, the name of the Saint of Wales.

2 - On Saint David’s Day (March 1 st ) it is traditional to wear a leek or daffodil in your buttonhole.

A Tradition A Welsh Tradition says that the person who sees the first flowering daffodil of Spring will be lucky enough to receive more gold than silver during the coming year

The Leek

The Leek as an Emblem There are several reasons why the leek became another WELSH Emblem. They are linked with battles fought between the Welsh and the Saxons- ENGLISH Legend says that the Welsh leader who may have been Saint David ordered his soldiers to gather the wild leeks growing on the battlefield and wear them on their caps or helmets, so they could identify themselves in the confusion of battle.

The Welsh won and after adopted the leek as their emblem. There is a Welsh saying – Wear a leek in your cap, but also be sure to have one in your heart.

The Welsh Flag

The Welsh Dragon is used as an emblem on many products from clothes to sports products.

The Story of the Welsh Dragon (y Ddraig Goch This goes back centuries to when the Celts invaded Britain. The story comes from the Mabinogion (collection of 11 Welsh tales)

It is said that the Red and invading White Dragons fiercely fought each other. The noise they made was killing the land and animals and destroying King Lludd’s Kingdom

King Lludd visits his sibling Llefelys in France who tell him to big a big pit, give the dragons mead to make them sleep then bury them in the pit. He does and imprisons both dragons in here

Years later King Vortigorn wants to build a castle over the pit, but it keeps falling down and nobody knows why A little boy tells him it’s because the dragons are trapped underneath

King Vortigorn frees both dragons They have another battle but this time the red Dragon wins! Horray!

WELSH FOODS

When we tasted the Welsh Cheeses everyone made a silly face because it wasn’t very nice. It was too strong for me – Well for me it was, but everyone liked the Welsh Cakes. Maybe not everyone.

I didn’t like the Cheeses, but I kind of like the cockles- Welsh shell fish.

The orange cheese was lovely and very nice and very soft. Out of all the cheeses this was my favourite. In Wales we make lots of cheese.

Ben enjoyed all the foods. He was happy to try Welsh cakes, Bara Brith, Cockles and lots of Welsh Cheeses.

The green cheese wasn’t very nice, it was soft and squidgy. I didn't like the little green bits, they were very chewy. I also tried the Harlech cheese it tasted a bit better than the green cheese. It was very very chewy, but there were no little bits in it

We wear our Welsh costumes on St Davids Day ( March 1 st )

Welsh ladies wear: Red and black shawl Tall hat Blouse Red skirt Black shoes This welsh lady is wearing a daffodil on her blouse.

Welsh boys wear White shirt Red and black waistcoat Flat cap Black trousers Black shoes This welsh boy is wearing a daffodil in his button hole and a leek over his heart.

The welsh rugby shirt is red. The three welsh feathers are on the chest of the shirt.

On St Davids day, we all dress up in welsh costumes. Some people wear their Welsh lady costumes. Some wear their Rugby shirts……….. Sometimes people dress up like dragons and daffodils……….don’t they look smart!

This shows how important sports is, especially rugby, to Welsh people.

Rugby is the national sport of Wales. It is played in all schools and we all love supporting our team, to win the Grand Slam and World Cup. “We are about to watch, Wales v Australia in the World Cup!”

This is our National Rugby stadium from the outside, doesn’t it look amazing! It has a retractable roof and holds over 75,000 people. It looks even better from the inside! What a wonderful atmosphere to be part of when Wales are playing.

Rugby is a amazing bone crunching sport with lots of contact with your opposition. There are a lot of back snapping tackles and a lot of fierce rucking!!! Jonah Lomu is the best rugby player who has lived on this planet. He smashes everyone who is in his way like a steam train. A rugby pitch is 50 metres each half, which means it is 100 metres altogether.

The Blues play at the Cardiff City Stadium and soon back at Arms Park and are captained by Paul Tito The Dragons play at Rodney Parade and are captained by Luke Charteris The Scarlets play at Park Y Scarlets and their captain is Matthew Rees The Ospreys play at the Liberty Stadium and their captain is Alun Wyn Jones

This brand new stadium is where Wales’ best football team play. Lots of children and adults in Cardiff and all over south Wales support Cardiff City This was the first game in this stadium against Celtic

Football is played in schools all over Wales. Swansea City are the first Welsh team ever to play in the Premier League. They get to play the best team on the planet LIVERPOOL John Charles a famous Welsh footballer, who was known as the Gentle Giant You must have heard of Ryan Giggs, he plays on the left wing for Wales and Man Utd.

Wales is a proud sporting nation. Here are some of the sports we play:

SPORTS DAY AT ST. NICHOLAS On Sports Day everyone takes part in their houses (Haf, Hydref, Gaeaf and Gwanwyn) We all try to win, but at St. Nicholas it’s not the winning but the taking part that counts.

The Story of St. David (Dewi Sant) by Bethan Ash (Year 6)

St. David only let the monks at his monastery eat basic food like bread, leeks and salt for dinner, every day!

However over at St. Benedict’s Monastery, he thought that his monks should have proper varied meals and drink wine and beer. They had a lot of fun.

David on the other hand thought alcohol was a sin, so he only let his monks drink water. He drunk a lot of water himself and that’s how he became known as DAVID THE WATERMAN.

The Isle of Wight. David went to the Isle of Wight to learn about the ways of God from Paulinus. Years later as Paulinus got old and blind David went back, touched his eyes and…

Paulinus got healed here It was a miracle, suddenly he could see again!!! Paulinus was so happy and proud that David, who he had shown the ways of God to years ago, had thought of him.

Back at the monastery; David didn’t allow his monks any sleep between Friday evening to Sunday morning. I must Wake up!

David also didn't let his monks use oxen to plough the fields they had to do it themselves. This would give them great strength.

One day at Llandewi Brefi, thousands of people, including Bishops came to hear David preach about god, but because the crowd was so large they couldn’t hear!

David wanted to speak and be heard, so Paulinus told him to lay down his handkerchief on the ground.

Suddenly a huge maintain rose from beneath him. He was so happy that he could preach about God.

David became famous and after many years preaching, he became Archbishop of St. David’s and the Patron Saint of Wales. Meniva will be renamed St. David’s after me
