4 Phonics and reading skills are taught in 6 distinct phases. These phases are set out in the letters and sounds document.

5 Phase 1 (pre school) * Showing an awareness of rhyme and alliteration. * Distinguishing between sounds in the environment and phonemes. * Exploring and experimenting with sounds and words. * Discriminating speech sounds in words. * Beginning to orally blend and segment phonemes.

9 Phase 5 This phase is taught in Year 1. Graphemes: ay, ou, ie, igh, ea, ee, oy, ir, ue, aw, wh, ph, ew, oe, au, a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e. Learning alternate spellings and pronunciations.

11 In addition to this, each week the children learn ‘tricky’ spelling words (those that are not spelt phonetically) and key sight vocabulary. There are 300 words to learn on the key sight word list. (100 in Rec/Y1 and an additional 200 in year 2)

12 The Phoneme Check We teach the children that some graphemes can make different phoneme sounds in different words.

13 We will learn or revise some high frequency words every lesson.

14 We learn rhymes to recall tricky words.

15 We teach a new phoneme and practise making new words.

16 In Full Circle children learn word families using one phoneme/grapheme. Tie Pie Pies Ties

17 At Phase 5 we identify different graphemes that make the same phoneme or ‘sound’.

18 Putting it into practice - reading is part of every phonics lesson.

19 Every lesson we write a sentence that includes the phonemes/graphemes we have learnt and some high frequency words.
