2 Introduction  The Kenya Coastal Development Project (KCDP) project development objective is to promote an environmentally sustainable management of Kenya’s coastal and marine resources by strengthening the capacity of existing relevant government agencies and by enhancing the capacity of rural micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in selected coastal communities.  The Project Development Objective (PDO) is to promote environmentally sustainable and equitable growth among coastal populations in the target areas through improved livelihoods and value addition.  The Project is funded by the World Bank through Global Environmental Fund (GEF) in the tune of US$ 42.00 million.

4 Institutions Implementing Agency Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) is a State Corporation in the Ministry of Fisheries Development of the Government of Kenya. It is mandated to conduct aquatic research covering all the Kenyan waters and the corresponding riparian areas including the Kenyan's EEZ in the Indian Ocean waters. Six Other Institutions  Coast Development Authority (CDA)  Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS)  Ministry of Fisheries through Fisheries Department  Ministry of Lands (Physical Planning)  National Environment Management Authority (NEMA)  Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI)

5 Four Project Components COMP1: Sustainable management of fisheries resources. The project will support governance reform of fisheries management in the Kenyan Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). COMP2: Sound management of natural resources. This component aims to improve the sound management and regeneration of natural resources and biodiversity in the coastal and marine environments.

6 Component………Cont COMP3: Support for alternative livelihoods. This component aims to promote sustainable livelihoods within a sound governance framework that includes: spatial planning and land capability mapping to identify environmentally and socially sensitive areas COMP4: Capacity building, monitoring and evaluation system, project management, communication and Coastal Village Fund (CVF). This component aims to build the project coordination and implementation teams' capacity, promote dialogue amongst national partners and regional stakeholders, develop a communication strategy for development outreach and implement a CVF

7 Comp 4: Capacity building, M & E, Project Management, Communication and CommunityFunds for the Coast  Capacity building of the project coordination and implementation teams;  Development of dialogue amongst national partners and regional stakeholders;  Communication, Information and data management and outreach;  Administration of the Community Funds for the Coast;  Administration of Social assessments;  Oversight of environmental and social safeguards.
