1 Objective: To demonstrate understanding of key ideas and details in literature (A-CK.1.1) Pick up a copy of The Outsiders and finish reading Chapter 4 if you have not done so already. I will check in with you periodically until everyone is ready for discussion. If you HAVE finished Chapter 4, then you may: Read more Work on your character chart Work on “Therapeutic Writing” Continue brainstorming list of questions for Wildcat Ambassadors. There is a link to a Google doc on my Schoolwires page where you can post your questions. 5/2/16

2 Chapter 4: Introduction of Main Conflict In your groups, please discuss these questions and be ready to share: What are the clues before it actually happens? Why does it happen? Think about reasons beyond the obvious. What is ironic about their hiding place?

4 Chapter 5: Symbolic Act? p. 72: How are looks connected to identity? What judgments do we form about people based on how they look? With your group: Explore images online and find one that stands out to you as one for which snap judgments might be made about someone based on his/her appearance. Make a slide on the Google Slides presentation that I have made that explains what the snap judgments might be and why. Be sure to include the picture. The link is on my Schoolwires site. I will project the slides in about 15 minutes. The pictures must be SCHOOL APPROPRIATE.

You will do an on-demand writing assignment in a moment. When you finish the assignment, read Chapter 7. If you finish that, then you should move on to Chapter 8. We will discuss BOTH tomorrow (not homework, though). 5/4/16

So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. What does it mean to you? 5 minutes to write in journal. “’I always remembered it because I never quite got what he meant by it.’ “‘You know,’ Johnny said slowly, ‘I never noticed colors and clouds and stuff until you kept reminding me about them. It seems like they were never there before’” (Hinton 78). What do Johnny and Ponyboy give to one another?

9 Chapter 6: Fire = Rebirth Ponyboy = Phoenix? Dumbledore can explain it. On-demand writing: 1.Write a paragraph of 5-7 sentences to explain how the fire can represent rebirth for Ponyboy and infer what form that “rebirth” might take. If you have already read the book/read ahead, you can explain what happens later in the book. 2.Write a second paragraph explaining a situation in which YOU have been a “phoenix.”
