3 Group first formed in 1957 and called themselves the “Quarrymen.” Grew up listening to early American rock and roll. Changed their name to the “Silver Beetles” in imitation of Buddy Holly’s Crickets

4 Early career consisted of playing extended gigs in Hamburg, Germany. Cavern Club in Liverpool Met Brian Epstein Became their manager Cleaned up their look: haircuts, matching suits Got the group signed with Decca Records

6 First major hit in the U.S. was “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” In the next three years: 30 hits in the top 40 12 Number 1’s 1964 – first feature movie, A Hard Day’s Night 1965 – another movie, Help!

7 Controversy arose over religion Lennon was misquoted as saying the Beatles were “bigger than Jesus.” Many protests and some riots at their concerts. Last public performance was at Candlestick Park in San Francisco - 1966
