Teenage Violence and Gangs: Romeo and Juliet By: Rylie Kohlmeyer

Theme

Theme Description Teenage violence is when someone is harming others or they can be harming themselves Teenage violence can include weapons

Romeo and Juliet "Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries Thou that hast done me; therefore turn and draw" (Shakespeare,63). Tybalt wants to fight with Romeo, but he won’t. Tybalt then resorts to teenage violence and kills Mercutio. Romeo was so upset, so he returned the favor and he killed Tybalt.

Romeo and Juliet "It fits when such a villian is a guest. I'll not endure him"(Shakespeare,77). Tybalt sees Romeo at the party and he wants to fight. Lord Capulet stops him and says not to at the party. Tybalt plans his revenge for some other time.

Topic

Topic Description Gangs are mostly made up of people who love to fight or have problems Teens who love violence like Tybalt are more likely to start gangs or be bullies Gangs are also people who think they are better and stronger than you Gangs can be good or bad.

Research "A teenage jock, gunned down at a Lake Worth school, forgave the shooter but found no justice in the legal system"(Doup, Bushouse). In the past years the three people that were involved in the school shooting experienced a traumatizing experience. Violence leaves a incredible mark and once experienced nobody is the same person. Time doesn’t make the image of violence go away. Violence that takes place in a school only adds to the impact. Time can still help and make life more bearable.

Research "Chicago police are turning to social media and other alternative methods to try to prevent new gangland murders, after criminal gangs engaged in a four-day killing spree over Memorial Day weekend" (Guarino). At a press conference in Washington Park in Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel unveiled several designed gang activities. Target businesses, such as liquor and convenience stores, are prone to street violence. It is difficult to certify if gun violence is related to a gang. The police can draw conclusions on a victims history and the neighborhood where the crime was committed.

Research "While the survey showed some improvements in such behaviors as tobacco use and alcohol consumption, there were some disturbing findings on such fronts as depression and violence. The findings likely will come as a shock to most Oklahoma adults"(Pearson). The mental health association provides several programs for the schools in Tulsa. They help the students deal with issues such as depression, violence, and suicide. There are some signs for violence, depression, and suicide. For males the signs involve violence and destructive behavior. For females the signs are opposite. Programs and campaigns focusing more on male violence could be more influencing on the behavior of young males. Little focus on female violence could be one reason the female gangs are growing.

Romeo and Juliet "What, art thou drawn among these heartless hinds? Turn thee, Benvolio, look upon thy death" (Shakespeare, 65). Tybalt wants to create some violence, so he tells Benvolio to fight with him. The theme and the topic relates to Romeo and Juliet because Tybalt loves to fight, so there is a lot of teen violence. His friends are there to help him and they are like his gang. He tries to create havoc on the houses.
