What is Irony?

The use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning; a statement or situation where the meaning is contradicted by the appearance or presentation of the idea.

3 Types of Irony There are three different types of irony that you need to know: –Verbal Irony –Situational Irony –Dramatic Irony

Verbal Irony is a turn in which the intended meaning of a statement differs from the meaning that the words appear to express. This type of irony usually involves the use of sarcastic remarks.

Verbal Irony Example Your boyfriend shows up in ripped up jeans and a stained t-shirt. With a smirk, you say, "Oh! I see you dressed up for our date. We must be going to a posh restaurant."

Situational Irony involves an incongruity between what is expected or intended and what actually occurs. In other words, what you expect to happen does not actually happen! This is also where sometimes people “get what they deserve” or maybe “karma bites them.”

Situational Irony Examples You break a date with your girlfriend so you can go to the ball game with the guys. When you go to the concession stand, you run into your date who is with another guy. You stay up all night studying for a test. When you go to class, you discover the test is not until the next day.

Dramatic Irony is an effect produced by a narrative in which the audience knows more about present or future circumstances than a character in the story. Consequently, the reader feels the need to jump into the story to let the character know what is getting ready to happen.

Dramatic Irony Example Have you ever seen a horror movie that has a killer on the loose? You, and the rest of the audience, know that the teenagers should not go walking in the woods late at night, but they think a midnight stroll would be romantic. Needless to say, the teens become the next victims.

Dramatic Irony Example 2 When watching a talk show, the audience knows why a person has been brought on the show. However, the person sitting in a chair does not know that he is going to be reunited with a former lover. This adds to the suspense and humor of the show.

“Ironic” by Alanis Morisette An old man turned ninety-eight He won the lottery and died the next day It's a black fly in your cold iced tea It's a death row pardon two minutes too late And isn't it ironic... don't you think It's like rain on your wedding day It's a free ride when you've already paid It's the good advice that you just didn't take Who would've thought... it figures Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye He waited his whole dang life to take that flight And as the plane crashed down he thought "Well isn't this nice..." And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day It's a free ride when you've already paid It's the good advice that you just didn't take Who would've thought... it figures Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you When you think everything's okay and everything's going right And life has a funny way of helping you out when You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up In your face A traffic jam when you're already late A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife It's meeting the man of my dreams And then meeting his beautiful wife And isn't it ironic...don't you think A little too ironic...and, yeah, I really do think...

It's like rain on your wedding day It's a free ride when you've already paid It's the good advice that you just didn't take Who would've thought... it figures Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out Helping you out
