Abstract  The purpose of this interactive breakout session will be to discuss the project’s collaborative structure that produced reciprocal learning for the university’s students and its community partners. Providing meaningful service is a key standard for service learning projects and one of the successes of this collaboration is that it identified and met an authentic need in the community. Additionally, the students’ involvement in real-world applications of the theory, best practices, and strategies presented in course work provided opportunities for purposeful reflective practice and authentic self-assessment. 4

Session Objective  The presenters will present different perspectives on the planning, implementation and outcomes of the project and will discuss the critical role of data collection and analysis to assess the effectiveness of the partnerships for all stakeholders. 5

Course Design  SLP Embedded in Online Summer Institute Course  Four week introductory course that is a formal introduction to the program and brief overview of concepts, methods, research and pedagogy for alternative certification pre-service teachers. It is a mandatory precursor to internship.  Field Component  Collaborate with teacher leader to plan co-teaching and solo experience  Implement behavior management plan  Employ research-based strategies to maximize engagement and increase student learning  Align instruction with assessment tool  Experience and create collaborative learning opportunities 7

Project Design  Broaden Horizons STEM Camp  Two-week STEM camp utilized project-based learning curriculum  Focused on three areas of STEM including forensic science, technology, and engineering.  Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with 3, 2-hour sessions per day.  ULM’s new alternative certification teacher candidates observe master teachers model pedagogical strategies and behavior management techniques for the first two days, co-taught on the third day and solo taught on the last day of instruction.  Candidates were observed and evaluated by university supervisors who provided commendations and recommendations for improvement. 8

Outcomes 15

What Worked  M.A.T. Student Involvement Increased  New participants were told about it in orientation  Did online registration  Had two weeks to choose from  ULM student/ Teacher Leader/ Participant Relationships  Teacher leaders already had rapport with students.  Collaboration between teacher leaders and M.A.T. students helped with classroom management. 16

Lessons Learned  Make participation for interns mandatory regardless of previous classroom experience.  Don’t schedule camps concurrently.  Students were the best at synthesizing the experience. Reinforced learning.  Learning space needs to be conducive to the learning expectations. WiFi issues.  Let content expertise not scheduling dictate university student placement. 17

Next Steps  Continue to extend collaboration opportunities to include other university departments and community agencies. 18
