2 ABOUT SDC IN INDIA BACKGROUND GOAL A technical cooperation partner of India for more than fifty years. Since 2011, SDC’s programme focuses specifically on issues related to climate change. SDC’s Global Programme Climate Change (GPCC) supports innovative climate change adaptation and mitigation projects in select partner countries, facilities the generation and dissemination of knowledge and engages in climate change policy processes. Contribute to a climate compatible development in India over the long run by: Safeguarding development achievements from the negative impacts of climate change (Adaptation); and Reducing or avoiding greenhouse gas emissions without compromising India’s development goals (Mitigation).

6 5% of global CO2 emissions are caused by cement production and global consumption of cement is rapidly increasing particularly in emerging economies SDC is supporting the development of a new type of cement called LC3 that is based on a blend of limestone and calcined clay LC3 can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 30% compared to stanard cement (OPC). It is cost effective and does not require capital intensive modifications to existing cement plants. SDC and DST are working out modalities of their cooperation on Low Carbon Cement (LCC) and explore scope for cooperating on other mitigation/adaptation technologies LOW CARBON CEMENT PROJECT (LCC) Built Environment

7 Implementing Partners EPFL, Switzerland; [Project lead] Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay; CIDEM, University of Las Villas, Cuba Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA). Objectives Enable the recognition of a new low carbon cement type as suitable for general construction and initiate its establishment in the market. It has two components: Undertaking R & D to establish a standard that will allow widespread application of low carbon cement. Inform the industry about the results of the research and develop expertise on the new cement type. Built Environment LOW CARBON CEMENT PROJECT (LCC)

8 Cooperation with the private sector Cooperation with all major cement companies  interested to learn early on about this new technology Participation in stakeholder workshops and in the project Advisory Panel Independent verification of testing results in the companies own R&D facilites Collection of raw material samples in different regions of India Sharing data on resource availability Trial tests under industrial conditions Plant-scale production of LC3 Production of cement blocks for new Embassy building Support for standardization of LC3 Start commercializing LC3 products in India LOW CARBON CEMENT PROJECT (LCC) Built Environment

9 Objectives The project aims to reduce energy consumption in new buildings and promote best practices in designing and applying building energy-efficiency measures. Promote an integrated design approach Reinforce material testing capacities Develop guidelines for the design of energy-efficient residential buildings Prepare design templates for energy- efficient public buildings Build capacity and disseminate knowledge BUILDING ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROJECT (BEEP) Built Environment Implementing Partners Effin’art, Switzerland Greentech Knowledge Solutions, India

10 Cooperation with the private sector Integrated design workshops organized for large commercial buildings resulting in strategies for reduction of energy consumption by 20-40%. Guidelines for energy-efficient multi- storey residential buildings elaborated in consultation with private partners. 1000 building sector professionals trained aware of integrated design methodologies and best practices for energy-efficient buildings. Capacities of 5 private laboratories strengthended for testing the thermal performance of insulation materials. A design competition for external moveable shading systems for Indian designers was launched and protoypes are currently being developed in India. 11 Built Environment Objectives CAPACITY BUILDING FOR LOW CARBON & CLIMATE RESILIENT CITY DEVELOPMENT (CapaCITIES) Objectives Strengthen the capacities of city authorities to plan and implement measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and for coping with the effects of climate change. Climate relevant research and tools integrated into city planning. Adaptation and mitigation measures implemented in thematic sectors. Knowledge sharing and exchange between cities enabled. Implementing Partners Consortia of Swiss and Indian experts selected through an open tender. City Municipal Corporations of Coimbatore, Rajkot, Siliguri and Udaipur.

12 Implementing Partners UNDP India State Governments of Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Madhya Pradesh National and international experts Objectives Support the state governments of Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Madhya Pradesh in the implementation of their State Action Plans on Climate Change. Capabilities of state authorities to implement SAPCC’s enhanced. SAPCCs operationalized in select sectors (water, renewable energy, disaster risk reduction, forests) Experiences and approach shared. Hazard and Risk Management STRENGTHENING STATE STRATEGIES FOR CLIMATE ADAPTATION (3SCA)
