Funding Schemes Collaborative projects (CP) – Small or medium-scale focused research actions (STREP) Objective driven, focused around work plan. Min 3 MS. 1-4ME. 1.5’3 years – Large-scale integrating projects (IP) Comprehensive programmes, tackling multiple issues. 4-25ME. 3-5 years Networks of Excellence (NoE) Joint Programme of Activities by research teams in the context of longer term co-operation. Establishment of a single virtual centre of research, in order to overcome fragmentation which deters competitiveness. Coordination and support actions (CSA) Support to activities aimed at coordinating or supporting research activities and policies

Next Opportunity Second ICT Work Programme under FP7 (2009-2010), technology-enhanced learning research is Objective 2 of Challenge 4 (http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/telearn- digicult/telearn-objectives_en.html)http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/telearn- digicult/telearn-objectives_en.html ICT Call 5 (TeLearn) is anticipated to be published on 31 July 2009. Closing date: 3 November 2009. Information Day in Luxembourg, 24 March 2009

Target Outcomes a)Learning in the 21st Century: large-scale pilots addressing innovation in learning, teaching, assessment and participation (IP) b)Embedding learning experiences in organisational processes : new ways of combining creative, cognitive and computational processes (STREP). “Significant contribution to the competitiveness of European players (producers and users)” (EC) c)Adaptive and intuitive systems: affective/emotional approaches, assessing learning outcomes, feedback/guidance mechanisms with combination of simulation, story telling, and collaborative learning. (STREP)

Target Outcomes (2) d)Revolutionary learning appliances and advanced cognitive tutors: specific social and learning problems ( STREP ). “S pecific solutions, with significant market potential ” (EC) e)Focused interdisciplinary networks on specific emerging trends, linking a limited set of established experts, cross-fertilisation between disciplines. Should leverage national research activities to international level. ( NoE and CSA ) f)Awareness building and knowledge management on the results of EU RTD projects ( NoE and CSA )

Budget Distribution IPs: min 19.5 Meuro (max 27.3 Meuro) a) Learning in the 21st century b) Reinforce links between individual and organisational learning, and creativity STREPs: min 11.7 Meuro (max 19.5 Meuro) c) Innovative and adaptive intuitive systems for learning d) Revolutionary learning appliances NoE and CSA 10 Meuro e) Focused interdisciplinary networks f) Awareness building and knowledge management

Ideas for a proposal Communities of Practice – CoP, Ideas, concepts Food for a brainstorm

Ideas for a proposal Modern universities are developing towards loose conglomerates of (inter)discipline expertise that have a high degree of connectedness with society in the broader sense. 21st century universities may also be regarded as 'knowledge servers' in which a number of communities create, share, publish and apply knowledge

Unlike most information systems in educational organizations, the community system is open to the public and is free to use. It's very purpose is to allow people from outside the organization to connect within the realm of the university and to give insiders means to easily connect outside university, all having access to the same set of tools and services, which are extensible with tailor-made functionality.

The example case is Webclasses, which are short digital orientation courses for prospective students. Anyone with access to internet can enroll in these classes and participate in a free distance education course and interact with university teachers and other participants

Our principal objective is to gather people to collaborate and share knowledge on equal merits, regardless of their organization, culture or background. The goal of the project is to merge academic community structures with common internet practices to minimize participation thresholds and maximize their digital accessibility for our target groups. We believe that in order to achieve these goals, we need to develop a specialized set of tools on top of the existing Sakai architecture and create more european aware Sakai, based on support for the major european languages and cultural attitudes

Keywords Communities and collaboration Open content, access and source Everyware Hybrid organizations Collective knowledge management
