2 Common Characteristics  Less than 25 years old  Father not in home  Domineering mother  Academically challenged  Emotionally and/or psychologically disabled  Unmarried, maybe living at home w/ parents  Feelings of inadequacy and insecurity  Fascination with fire  Alcoholism  Parental neglect or abuse

3  Usually exhibit several, but not all characteristics  Sometimes exhibit none  Not all with these characteristics are arsonists

4 Early warning signs  Aggression  Cruelty to humans & animals  Destruction of property  Deceit  Theft = indicate a conduct disorder If starts a fire, aimed to harm - usually male and very impulsive

5 Motives  Financial gain - insurance fraud - burn down competition  Revenge (spite) - for a cause, jealousy, or prejudice  Excitement - no specific targets; just for fun

6  Vanity - to be the hero  To conceal a crime - destroy evidence  Vandalism - usually under age 18 (related to revenge & excitement)
