3 Context Clues Discovering the meaning of an unfamiliar word.

4 Steps to Teaching Context Clues First, the reader should recognize that the word is unknown. Second, the reader needs to decide the meaning of the word instead of skipping over the word. Third, the reader should look at the word and break it into known parts.

5 Steps to Teaching Context Clues Fourth, the reader will look at the passage to find information that might aid in discovering the meaning of the word. Fifth, the reader will use context clues and background to gather the meaning of the unknown word. Lastly, the reader will test the meaning of the word in the sentence to decide if the word makes sense.

ELACC2L4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies. a.
