Additional information Slides and Proceedings (to be published) can be found at: http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=86 Summing-up session: Friday February 10 th, 14:00, Main Auditorium

Session 1, R. Bailey: Plans and requirements for beam commissioning, years 1 and 2, Early beta minimum 2 m rather than 1 m. Colliding beam runs with 43 and 156 bunches need displaced bunches for LHCb. Justification for 75 ns? Useful intermediate for both machine & expts? Special machine set-ups, (TOTEM) – not the way for the machine to achieve maximum integrated luminosity. No bake-out in the LSS – objections on behalf of all experiments, RF and heavy Ions!

LSS Bakeout may not be possible during initial installation AT- VAC Proposed as a way to stay on schedule. Skipping the bake-out is the last resort to close the vacuum system on time following delays in equipment delivery and installation. Decision to be made with equipment owners and expts (SC/RP ask to be included) Any skipped bakeouts will be completed in first shutdown. General consensus that dropping the initial bakeout in IR3 and IR7 would be a good idea.

Session 5: Experiment-Machine Interface Commissioning the LHC Physics Programme by TSESMELIS, Emmanuel Commissioning the LHC Physics Programme Aspects of machine induced background in the LHC experiments by CORTI, Gloria Aspects of machine induced background in the LHC experiments Bringing the first LHC beams into collision at all 4 IP's by BRAVIN, Enrico Bringing the first LHC beams into collision at all 4 IP's The Solenoids and Dipole magnets of LHC experiments by HERR, Werner The Solenoids and Dipole magnets of LHC experiments Beam Dump and Injection Inhibits by WENNINGER, Jorg Beam Dump and Injection Inhibits Beam Condition Monitoring and Radiation Damage Concerns of the Experiments by MACPHERSON, Alick Beam Condition Monitoring and Radiation Damage Concerns of the Experiments Experimental equipment interacting with beam operation by MACINA, Daniela Experimental equipment interacting with beam operation

Session 5: summary Integrated luminosity of 10 fb -1 is the goal and changes in machine set-up should not be allowed to delay this goal. CRAG Commissioning and Running Advisory Group announced by CSO. Accelerator person should be made responsible for machine induced background. Bake-out of LSS upstream of experiments is important for early running when signal/noise will in any case be lower. Dipoles will be operated from the machine (ramped with energy together with compensators). Solenoids operated from the experiments (except ALICE): they create couplings and orbit distortions which may have to be corrected => magnet’s status sent via DIP to CCC Injection inhibit without dumping? Masking of experiment interlocks for SAFE beams? LHCb polarity change (W. Herr – a different orientation of crossing plane would help, but beam screen!!!!) ALICE responsible for ZDC operation, however NOT responsible for the zone where the ZDC is located

Sessions 8 & 9: Sector test: beam tests, M. Lamont: preparation, Will the sector test compromise collisions in 2007? Sector test must be part of normal LHC installation & not a special installation. Do the present plans, as a result of schedule delays leaving too short a time for full commissioning, violate the principle of not compromising QA? (Delay sector test to April 2007?) LHCb gentlemen’s agreement maintained. Much discussion on quench tests! Why not do quench tests at SPS. (K-H. Mess) Data exchange experiments and machine during sector test? (telephone!) The Sector Test will be maintained in November 2006 – (at least for the time being.)

Injection inhibit (why?) Signals not related to the dump signals, conceptually completely different –Use a signal physically different from the dump signal –Use the same signal but conditioned with the machine modes (Injection, Ramp, Stable Beams etc…… Do not dump the beam –Do not use BIC Non- maskable Safe (hardware…??)

Injection signal: possible solutions Different signal No dumpNon- maskable SafeAction New Hardware Convince management to find people/money (memorandum??) Different channel in the existing BIC ? Provide signal Different BIC channel in a new BIC??? SoftwareProvide software

Machine Modes Machine modes will be sent via DIP (unsafe, not possible to use it for the interlocks) Machine modes will be sent via Safe LHC Parameters that will be distributed around the machine in a failsafe and highly reliable way (energy included…). The present concept uses the General Machine Timing system for data distribution, with a special HW module to enter the data into the system. Details have still to be finalized (contact J. Serrano AB/CO) Therefore, I guess all experiments will have to make use of the GMT system and therefore, request it…
