4 Special Education & Communication Disorders Dr. Marlene Salas-Provance, Department Head Special Education Teachers and Speech-Language Pathologists are an integral part of the education system for special needs children In the inclusion model students with special needs spend most or all of their time with non-disabled students. The child has the right to participate and the school’s duty is to accept the child Speech therapy is provided outside of the classroom in individual or group therapy called “pull-out” Most education agencies provide a range of settings for education of special needs students from special classrooms, to mainstreaming to inclusion.
