D.Macina TS/LEATOTEM Meeting25/02/2004 Roman Pot test at the SPS Test of the Roman Pot prototype in the SPS proposed in December 2003 (CERN/LHCC 2003-061): Recommended by the LHCC (28-29/01/04) Accepted by the SPSC (03/02/04) Accepted by the ATC (23/10/03) Formal approval will take place in the Research Board on February 26

D.Macina TS/LEATOTEM Meeting25/02/2004 Roman Pot Prototype The Roman Pot consists of: 2 pots (vertical plane) fully equipped Final cooling system Motors from LEP collimators and the associated remote control In addition we will get signals from: Nearby BPM (~1.5 m downstream) for triggering purposes (pseudo" intensity signal, i.e. the sum signal from each plane of measurement. Its amplitude would be intensity dependent) 3 BLM to study their response as the RP approaches the beam (to be used later in the LHC for protection purposes)

D.Macina TS/LEATOTEM Meeting25/02/2004 Locations Position of the RP in the tunnel Upstream the QD51910 quadrupole (near the ECX5) : The RP is not an aperture restriction for the wide Fixed Target Beam Low radiation area (< 1 Gy per week at ~20 cm from beam pipe) Enough space for the installation Racks and control room: Some space in the BB5 building (ATLAS storage) to minimize the cable length The bottom of ECA5 not possible for radiation safety reasons 3 racks allocated (to be installed at the level -1) in BB5 Control room location under discussion

D.Macina TS/LEATOTEM Meeting25/02/2004 Location in the SPS ring

D.Macina TS/LEATOTEM Meeting25/02/2004 RP integration in the SPS

D.Macina TS/LEATOTEM Meeting25/02/2004 Work (to be) done during shutdown Cables installation Already installed: 2 cables for the motors and their remote control 3 cables for detectors HV, LV(DOH)/temperature and pressure reading 8 cables for cooling and its control 1 for the BPM reading To be installed (in the following two weeks) Optical fibers CMS multiservice cables To be installed (in the following three weeks) Ethernet cable (from BB5 to the tunnel) RS232 40 MHz (from BA5 to BB5)

D.Macina TS/LEATOTEM Meeting25/02/2004 Work (to be) done during the shutdown Infrastructure installation: Dummy beam pipe (next week) Roman Pot Support (next week) Cooling (offers undergoing): Connection to the General water system Valves to reduce and regulate pressure Safety valves Flow meters Electricity (to be checked): 220 V and 380 V in the tunnel 220 V at the racks

D.Macina TS/LEATOTEM Meeting25/02/2004 RP support in the SPS Standard SPS support 450 mm

D.Macina TS/LEATOTEM Meeting25/02/2004 RP operation First discussion with the AB/OP group: During the NON-TOTEM runs: The SPS Control Room needs to know if the RP is in or out (we have to provide a signal based on our switches or ….) The Roman Pot will be software interlocked (beam dumped if RP in). The BLM may help to detect accidental movements (to be checked) We have to think about an inhibit signal, either hardware or software, to avoid accidental RP movements During the TOTEM runs: RP can be controlled either from BB5 or from SPS CR If access required, it takes ~ 30 minutes to start up the beam again

D.Macina TS/LEATOTEM Meeting25/02/2004 SPS schedule If we require <= 8 bunches in the machine : The machine set-up is similar to the one required for the LHC collimator test If the RP test follows the MDs dedicated to the LHC collimator tests => no additional set-up time Proposal : 2 eight-hours periods (from 8:00-16:00) following the LHC collimators MDs

D.Macina TS/LEATOTEM Meeting25/02/2004

D.Macina TS/LEATOTEM Meeting25/02/2004 RP installation Si det. installation 8-hours TOTEM runs Cooling installation
