March 2007 Jimmy(JeongYeop) Yang (KORPA) Slide Doc: IEEE 802. 15-07-0649-00-0ban 2 QoS of the BAN Jimmy(JeongYeop) Yang, YangMoon Yoon KORPA(Korea Radio Promotion Agency)

March 2007 Jimmy(JeongYeop) Yang (KORPA) Slide Doc: IEEE 802. 15-07-0649-00-0ban 3 Purpose and Contents This documents presents the QoS of the BAN. Contents –Why QoS needed for BAN? –QoS class –Service Classes & Characteristics for BAN Applications –Examples –New traffic type for BAN –Summary –References

March 2007 Jimmy(JeongYeop) Yang (KORPA) Slide Doc: IEEE 802. 15-07-0649-00-0ban 4 Why QoS needed for BAN? QoS dimensions ☞ Data rate, Delay, Error Rate, others QoS of BAN ☞ Each BAN application requires different data traffic ☞ Different adequate bandwidth may be requested by each application ☞ Especially medical data need much reliability

March 2007 Jimmy(JeongYeop) Yang (KORPA) Slide Doc: IEEE 802. 15-07-0649-00-0ban 5 QoS class QoS could be considered in both application layer and PHY&MAC layers QoS classes could be flexible and amended to support new services and standards of PHY and MAC layers

March 2007 Jimmy(JeongYeop) Yang (KORPA) Slide Doc: IEEE 802. 15-07-0649-00-0ban 6 Service Classes & Characteristics for BAN applications Service Class Data Rate DelayBERApplications 1. Real time Significant data Medium (Kbps) Highly Interactive<10 -10 Emergency medical data 2. Real time Graphic image High (Mbps) Interactive <10 -6 Medical video data 3. Telephony and messaging Low (Kbps) Conversational <10 -3 Non-emergency data 4 New services TBD New Applications

March 2007 Jimmy(JeongYeop) Yang (KORPA) Slide Doc: IEEE 802. 15-07-0649-00-0ban 7 An example Service Class Data Rate DelayBERApplications 1. Real time Significant data 8-32Kbps Highly Interactive <20ms 10 -6 – 10 -9 Body data report Emergency care 2. Real time Graphic image 192Kbps- 10Mbps Interactive 50ms – 150ms 10 -3 – 10 -6 ECG, EEG, EMG, Medical video data 3. Telephony and messaging 8-64Kbps Conversational 100ms – 200ms 10 -1 – 10 -3 Voice telephony Non-emergency diagnose 4 New services TBD New Applications Traffic Type might be considered and suggested

March 2007 Jimmy(JeongYeop) Yang (KORPA) Slide Doc: IEEE 802. 15-07-0649-00-0ban 8 New Traffic types for BAN Characteristics of BAN ☞ Low power consumption, Simultaneous operations of many devices, Single user, others Find & Define New Traffic Types ☞ The bit rate may be decided by applications ☞ The bit rate may be assigned by a system or user in case ☞ Statistics from many simulation tests are required ☞ New traffic types can be divised to support new services

March 2007 Jimmy(JeongYeop) Yang (KORPA) Slide Doc: IEEE 802. 15-07-0649-00-0ban 9 Summary Adopting QoS classes could be helpful to improve the reliability of BAN applications QoS class of BAN might be flexible Top down approach  This QoS model is approached in terms of Services(applications), not Network layers
