1 What guidelines, concerning copyright laws should be used in the classroom?

2 In the United States, copyright law protects the authors of "original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works."

3  Up to 10% of a copyrighted musical composition, but no more than 30 seconds  Up to 10% of a body of sound recording, but no more than 30 seconds  Any alterations cannot change the basic melody or the fundamental character of the work www.ncpublicshools.org

7  Fair use is generally a short excerpt and almost always attributed.  Fair use is a complex doctrine meant to allow certain valuable social purposes. One example is education.  When using created materials in an educational setting, fair use is part of a web of authority we rely on to use others' works.

8  What is the character of the use?  What is the nature of the work to be used?  How much of the work will you use?  What effect would this use have on the market for the original or for permissions if the use were widespread?  After asking these questions, make a judgment about the final balance: overall does the balance tip in favor of fair use or in favor of getting permission?

9  In the 90s USA commercial copyright violation involving more than 10 copies and value over $2500 was made a felony.
