Solutions Quiz, Neutralization Reactions, Titrations

 Objective:  Today I will be able to:  Apply knowledge of colligative properties, separation of mixtures and solubility curves on a quiz.  Predict products of neutralization reactions  Describe how titration is used to identify the concentration of an unknown solution  Evaluation/Assessment:  Informal assessment: monitoring student questions as they complete the exam and the practice  Formal assessment: analyzing responses to the exam, exit ticket and practice problems  Common Core Connection  Build Strong Content Knowledge  Make sense of problem and persevere in solving them  Reason abstractly and quantitatively  Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Lesson Sequence  Evaluate: Warm – Up  Evaluate: Solutions Quiz  Engage: Everyday Acids and Bases Activity  Explain: Titration Notes/ Demo  Elaborate: Titration Practice  Evaluate: Exit Ticket

Warm - Up  What is the van’t hoff factor for the following compounds?  P 2 O 5  CaCl 2  FeCl 3  Mg 3 (PO 4 ) 2  What are the 4 colligative properties we studied?

Objective  Today I will be able to:  Apply knowledge of colligative properties, separation of mixtures and solubility curves on a quiz.  Predict products of neutralization reactions  Describe how titration is used to identify the concentration of an unknown solution

Homework  Finish Titration Practice  Lab Next Week, Wear Closed Toe Shoes  B-Day – Monday  A-Day – Tuesday

Agenda  Warm – Up  Solutions Quiz  Everyday Acids and Bases Activity  Titration Notes/ Demo  Titration Practice  Exit Ticket

Solutions Quiz Take everything off of your desk except for a calculator and a writing utensil. When you finish your quiz turn your paper over so Ms. Ose can see that you are done.

Everyday Acid and Bases Test products on Litmus paper to see pH

Titrations Notes/Demo

Neutralization Reactions  Chemical reaction between an acid and a base  HCl + NaOH  NaCl + H 2 O  The salt produced can be neutral, acidic, or basic  Depends on the strength of the acid and base involved

Titrations  Acid-Base Titration – laboratory procedure used to determine the concentration of one solution using a solution of known concentration  Standard Solution – the solution with the known concentration - Can be an acid or base

Titrations

Endpoint  Point at which the concentration of H 3 O + = OH -  An indicator is present, which changes color when the reaction is complete  Dramatic change in the pH  M A V A = M B V B

Titration Example  A 43 ml volume of NaOH was titrated with 32 ml of.100 M HCl. What is the molarity of the NaOH? (.100)(32) = (M B )(43) =.07 M NaOH

Tips for a Successful Titration  Always use clean glassware, especially if you are not sure whether it previously held an acid or a base  Take careful measurements during the entire lab (i.e. volume of acids, bases, etc…)

Tips for a Successful Titration  Use proper titration techniques – add base drop by drop, make sure flask is not bumping against the buret, shake flask thoroughly after adding each drop of base  Read the buret correctly! Final – Initial = Volume Used

Tips for a Successful Titration  Repeat titration for accuracy – calculate the molarity of your base after each trial. If the molarity matches after two trials, you can probably call it a day.

Exit Ticket  For the following, predict the products and label the acid, base, conjugate acid and conjugate base.  HNO 3(aq) + H 2 O (l)   CH 3 NH 2(aq) + H 2 O (l) ↔  HCl (aq) + H 2 O (l) ↔  H 2 SO 4(aq) + H 2 O (l) 
