WARM UP 9/8 1. Review your work from last week. Now, describe the process you used to “chunk” the Nixon speech: how did you and your partner(s) decide to do it? Did your categorizing of parts of his speech helps you to understand it? Why/why not? 2. EVALUATE Nixon’s speech by using these general questions to guide you:  How reliable is Nixon’s shared perspective on the war? How can you tell?  Is this source useful when acquiring background information for the Vietnam War? How so?  What do you feel like this resource leaves out?

LEARNING TARGETS  To build context for a Vietnam War fictional novel.  To identify Nixon’s stance on the war in Vietnam as illustrated through his speech.  To analyze how Nixon’s argument is built in his speech.  To compare/contrast Kerry’s response to Nixon’s speech with the speech itself.

AGENDA 9/8  Warm up/review  Review answers to questions from last week’s work.  Work on structural aspect together.  Review homework: John Kerry’s speech.

NIXON’S SPEECH (REVIEW)  BEFORE you read,  identify unknown words; define using context clues.  DURING your reading, answer these questions: 1. What did Nixon believe would be the consequences of immediate U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam? 2. What specific events did Nixon cite to support his arguments against "precipitate troop withdrawal"? 3. What is meant by "Silent Majority"? 4. THEN, indicate what Nixon’s stance is on the war in Vietnam. In your own words, summarize why you think he holds this stance.  AFTER reading, analyze how this argument is built.  Label the speech, chunk by chunk, with your partner (i.e., background about the war, attempt to appeal to the masses, validation for his position, etc.).  Look over how you and your partner labeled each “chunk” of text from the speech. Based on this, answer these two questions: What is Nixon’s purpose in delivering this speech? How does the speech’s organization support that purpose?

KERRY’S SPEECH  Annotate (DONE!)  Evaluate. At the end of the article, answer these questions:  How reliable of a resource is this? How can you tell?  How useful of a resource is this? What might it be useful for?  What do you feel like this resource leaves out?  Synthesize. Look back at the content of previous articles. Answer these questions:  In what ways does this article build upon, connect to, corroborate, or contradict previous readings?  Now that this new piece of content is added to the puzzle, what conclusions can you draw or what bigger picture is coming clear?

QUICK WRITE  Overall, what did you learn about the Vietnam War, the Americans of the time, speeches, etc., through this activity? What questions do you still have? Write 3-5 sentences.
