On the Surface of Mars Alma, Garron, Ivan, Paige Utterback Middle School Ms. Diana Ochoa and Ms. Deborah Copeland 6 th Grade 4/19/07

Results from the Part 2 Activity (with the HiRise Data)

More Results from the Part 2 Activity (with the HiRise Data)

Results from the Part 2 Activity (with the HiRise Data) We found these interesting results, Mars has more than one canyon, both of its poles are cold, it has rivers and lava, lots of volcanoes, one of the volcanoes is the size of Arizona and it is named the red planet. We found these results by studying the pictures and listening to the guest speaker.

More Results from the Part 2 Activity (with the HiRise Data) Volcanoes on Mars don’t erupt and they are larger than the ones on earth. Mars does not have life or water on it like the Earth. It is colder on Mars than on Earth. Mars is half the size of Earth. Mars is farther away from the sun therefore it is colder than Earth.

More Results from the Part 2 Activity (with the HiRise Data) There are mini-tornadoes and dust devils on Mars. They are not as similar to the ones as here on Earth. There are sand dunes, gullies and craters on both planets.

Next Steps Would your region of Mars be a good place to land? Why? Why not? It is too cold to land there and there is low air pressure. The surface is not solid. It is bumpy. What kind of features would you want to know more about if you could choose a landing site? Why? If there was life on it. If there was lava flow or channels. To know the history to know what might have been there.

Next Steps Continued… What would your criteria be for selecting a landing site? Why? We would want a map. We would need to know what kind of land features were there so we wouldn’t land in a canyon.
