2 A person who is ‘owned’ by another person. They have nothing of their own: No belongings No money No rights or freedom Not even their own name EVERYTHING is owned by their ‘master’

3 Between 1450 and 1870 21 million Africans were made slaves. Up to 2 million (or almost 10 percent) died on the Atlantic crossings known as ‘the middle passage’ Probably as many slaves (at least 7 million) died on the way to the slave ports.

4 The journey from Africa to America took between 1 and 9 months. Conditions were horrific: America Africa Britain Triangular Trade

5 People were crammed onto ships like sardines. There was no air nor room to move. There were no toilets so slaves would lie in their and other slave’s waste. The white slave traders believed it was their right to rape women and do what they liked. As a result of this many female slaves became pregnant whilst on the slave ship.

You should consider the following- 1) How were you caught? 2) What are your first impressions on the boat? (some Africans will never have been on a boat!) 3) Are you with your family? 4) What are the conditions like? Are you tied up? 5) Are the slave traders looking after you?
