2 Overview: In this unit, we will explore the immigration trends and population of ELL students in the United States. We also will address some of the unique challenges facing ELL students in terms of emotional and social development.

3 Immigration Trends…. What types of immigration trends are we seeing in the United States in terms of LEP (Limited English Proficient)/ELL students?

4 Immigration Trends… About 2.3 million LEP students in grades k-12; this is an increase of almost 70 percent since 1984 California, Texas, NY among the highest LEP enrollment followed by Florida and Illinois Most common second languages: Spanish, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Korean Almost half of LEP are immigrants and about 40% in poverty

5 Immigration & Education… Why is it important to effectively educate students who are LEP/ELL identified?
