1 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Experience and plans from running the (SCT) DAQ at SR1 HEP Cosmics setup Running modes Problems Future

2 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Scope ~10% SCT 468 modules available for read out –Top and bottom sectors + equivalent sectors of TRT Full DAQ chain –LTP, s-link etc –No CTP Calibration and ”Physics” (cosmics) running 13 online DAQ computers –Trigger control –ROD control –User Interface –Analysis –ROSes –Event Builder

3 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Calibration running @ SR1 TIM ROD Analysis PC, GUI etc SBC Triggers Single DAQ crate Triggers from RODs or TIM Gain, Noise, Trim etc tests Noise occupancy and synchronous noise tests Events Histograms

4 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Setting things up : mapping checks Power Supply Channel DAQ TX Channel DAQ RX Channel Physical module Hard reset scan Probe scan Trim check Location Production database Offline position Alignment

5 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Running calibrations Ran top sector, then bottom sector, then top + bottom sector together Usual variety of tests: –3 Point Gain –Response Curve –Noise occupancy (Async + Synch) –Self-pickup noise occupancy (double trigger) –Opto scans

6 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Experience running calibrations Good if all is set up correctly –Not tolerant to single point failures –Absolutely need to have well behaved system (opto, modules etc) Now much easier to get to this point –DSP code identifies trouble makers Many fixes still require guidance by an expert hand

7 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Physics running TIM ROD SCT LTP Event Builder Event display Monitoring SCT ROS TRT LTP Scintillators Events Triggers TRT ROS TRT DAQ HW

8 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Timing-in Look at individual modules –Calculate concidences between top and bottom in DSP code –Scan the delay (BOC delay) –Good to ~few ns for overall timing –Confirmed by offline monitoring Module  module timing done by dead reckoning in advance (fibre lengths)

9 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Coincidences vs time: Non-coincident hits Coincident hits Correct delay Chose correct delay  Saw tracks!

10 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ After concidence scan with top sector only

11 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Configuration Started running with thresholds as set from production database –Not good – wide variety of thresholds Once problem identified, two different “good” thresholds used –“Trim target” i.e. uncorrected 1 fC –“Response curve 1 fC” Includes ~10% wafer-by-wafer correction for variations in ABCD calibration capacitor

12 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Stability Good cosmic/ noise runs Long noise run Problem runs

13 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Good physics mode data Cosmics: –280k cosmics at trim target –170k cosmics at 1 fC corrected Noise Runs: –900k events at 0.9 fC RC – look for correlated noise –490k events [0.9 - 1.2 fC RC] threshold scan –220k events in trigger rate noise scan –14k events with different grounding schemes –90k events looking for pickup from TRT –TRT heater pickup tests (on/off) – 66k https://uimon.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Atlas/MonitoringLogbook For more details

14 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Headaches Opto TX and RX tunings still causing problems/errors –Query over mark/space ratio –Worries over VCSELs –Optical cause of tbin “000” hits seen by offline in 6 modules? ROS machine problems –Required reboot, remount, … –Possibly linked to invalid data coming from ROD –Some ideas as to what might be the cause… Initialisation problems in SctRodDaq start-up –Particularly after crate reboot –Being fixed as they are found/understood Further automation of module turn-on procedure required Low level of module HV and LV trips to be investigated Event filter requires configuration before start of run. EF crashed so was removed Upload of configurations needs streamlining

15 4 July 2006 Alan Barr - SCT DAQ Issues for the pit Configuration (inc. DCS) still a big area First large-scale multi-crate test Parallelism needed for analysis Much harder to reset off-detector hardware! Auto recovery required for –Modules (bring back into synch) –OPTO tuning –DAQ systems as a whole Set up of trigger chain (resets etc) through LTPs ROD monitoring not physics-ready yet Full list of active work topics in yesterday’s DAQ working meeting
