1 SISG ConOps Operational Functional Deployments Space Internetworking Strategy Group Peter Shames 22 Oct 2009 Version 1.6 DRAFT

2 This package includes a set of functional deployments reflecting a nominal SISG Space Internetworking allocation of functionality to system elements These are intended to be relevant for a future typical SISG deployment where agencies support standard services for service management, network control, and space internetwork operation Variations on these charts are included to show the differences between current operations and evolved scenarios and this future view Only a “DTN” and “Non-DTN” scenarios, and only a single ABCBA configuration is used for simplicity A = Lander and Lander MOC, B = Orbiter and Orbiter MOC, C = Ground Communications Only the forward direction transfer are shown for simplicity Major Features: High level set of nominal operational functions Representation of high level data and control flows Use of colors to associate functions to the high level allocations User Mission System (MOC & Spacecraft, shown as white box) Service Management Network Control Service Execution (space & ground) The technical content for this material was primarily derived from: SISG ConOps, revised 13 Oct 09 SISG telecons, 13 & 21 Oct 09 Functional Deployment Diagrams

3 Scenario: A specific sequence of activities conducted by the the SISG network elements and/or Mission User MOC to accomplish support for one or more mission events. Activity: A specification of system behavior described by a sequence of one or more actions performed by the SISG network elements and/or Mission User MOC. Function: The set of actions or activities performed by some object to achieve a goal. The transformation of inputs to outputs that may include the creation, modification, monitoring, or destruction of elements. Action: Something that happens within an object, either with or without participation of another object. Definition of Terms

13 Evolved Forward CFDP n.5 – ABCBA All Non DTN Description This scenario depicts the transfer of files, packets and Direct TM/TC to a single Agency A Lander using the support of an Orbiter provided by Agency B and a Earth terminal (nominally Agency C). Neither Agency A, Agency B, nor Agency C implements DTN. Presumes standardization of the “last hop” delivery and the relay coordination functions Note that standard CFDP transfer is only between the Orbiter MOC and the Orbiter, over a single (SLE extended) Space Link End to end services Bidirectional transfer of files between the Lander and its control centre (CFDP enabled by private file forwarding and staging functions executed in the Lander) Bidirectional transfer of packets (within a file) between the Lander and its control centre Bidirectional transfer of (packetized and non packetized) Direct TM/TC/AOS frames between the Lander and its control centre (as files with Orbiter Proxy processing) Ground cross support services Private transfer of files between Lander MOC and Orbiter MOC Bidirectional “CSTS” transfer of files between Lander Control Centre and Earth terminal Space-Ground CCSDS services Bidirectional CFDP (with private file forwarding and staging functions) Bidirectional Space Packet transfer (in link from Orbiter MOC, in files from Lander MOC) Bidirectional TM/TC/AOS frame transfer Space-Space CCSDS services Bidirectional CFDP (with private file forwarding and staging functions) Bidirectional Space Packet transfer (using Packet SAP of Prox-1) Bidirectional Prox-1 frame transfer (using UDD SAP of Prox-1) Agency specific functions Agency A Lander MOC must handle Creation of a file for the Orbiter to deliver (direct TM/TC, files, Encapsulation packets), the addition of metadata / file delivery instructions Use of private “file forwarding” service to send file to the Orbiter MOC Agency B Orbiter MOC must handle Private “file forwarding” and data staging services The packing/unpacking of files (to convert between the Lander Direct TM/TC services and CFDP) The interpretation/addition of metadata / file delivery instructions, and Transmission of data files to the Orbiter using CSTS File service and CFDP Agency B Ground Complex must handle the packing/unpacking of files (to convert between the ground file transfer services and CFDP) and the interpretation/addition of metadata / file delivery instructions. 15 Current Forward TC Scenario – ABCBA Description This scenario depicts the current forward transfer of files (possibly containing packets or direct TC frames) to a single Agency A Lander using the support of a Ground Complex C and an Orbiter and Orbiter GDS provided by Agency B. Neither Agency A, Agency B, nor the Ground Complex C implements DTN. Presumes no standardization of the “last hop” delivery or the relay coordination functions Note that standard C FDP transfer is only between the Orbiter MOC and the Orbiter, over a single (SLE extended) Space Link End to end services (n.b. Forward only, return is different) Mono-directional transfer of packets (within a file) between the Lander control centre and its Lander (using the Orbiter private services, protocols & process differs from agency to agency) Mono-directional return of data from Lander to its control center (return direction protocols are different from forward, and differ from agency to agency) Transfers require specialized, pre-agreed, manipulation of data by the Orbiter MOC and by the Orbiter Process is almost entirely manual, including planning, file upload assembly, and any retransmission processing which must be explicitly commanded Ground cross support services (n.b. Forward only, return is different) Mono-directional transfer of files between Lander Control Centre and Orbiter Control Centre (using FTP or other private means) Mono-directional transfer of files between Orbiter Control Centre and Earth Terminal, after integration of Lander file into Orbiter file upload (using SLE CLTU) Mono-directional Space Packet transfer (within file, via orbiter, with special handling) Private Orbiter Control Center to Orbiter file transfer protocol (mission and agency unique but might involve CFDP operating in Earth terminal) Ground-Space CCSDS services (n.b. Forward only, return is different) Mono-directional TC frame transfer using SLE-CLTU Might use CFDP or PUS Svc 13, but this is an orbiter project choice Space-Space CCSDS services (n.b. Forward only, return is different) Mono-directional Prox-1 bitstream transfer (UDD SAP of Prox-1) Mono-directional Space Packet transfer (after aligning data and extracting Packets from UDD SAP bitstream delivered by Prox-1) Agency specific functions (n.b. Forward only, return is different) Agency B Ground Control Center must handle The packing/unpacking of files (to convert between the ground file transfer from Agency A and its file upload formats, and Handling of files according to its private uplink file transfer protocol, and The definition of the filename to provide limited metadata / file delivery instructions. Agency B Orbiter must handle private “file forwarding” and data staging services the packing/unpacking of files (to convert between the Orbiter private file transfer protocol and Orbiter file store), Interpretation of filename as metadata / file delivery instructions, and proxy processing and transmission of data types (direct TM/TC, files, Encapsulation packets) or delivery of the file contents as a bitstream across the Proximity-1 UDD SAP. v 1.6 – 22 Oct 2009 15
