The Hot seat communicative adaptable requires no preparation

How to play One S sits in the Hot Seat, facing the class Ss ask the Hot Seat S questions Hot Seat S answers T writes the questions on the board At the end, T saves the questions and uses them in a follow-up activity What’s your name? My name’s Bold. What’s your name?

Other ideas: Use a ball to choose Ss to ask questions Have the Hot Seat S ask the questions Have a high-level S be the “teacher” and write the questions on the board Give the Hot Seat S a way to politely refuse to answer (e.g. “I’d rather not say”) Have Ss prepare questions before the activity, in pairs or groups

Let’s play!

Taboo Fun vocabulary game Encourages creative thinking, fluency Good for Ss who like competition

How to play Set a timer for 30 seconds Choose a card Give clues to your team, without using the taboo words! Fish You can’t say: animal water river It swims…it lives in the ocean…you can eat it.... A whale? A crocodile? A fish!

Other ideas: Ss can make their own cards For lower-level Ss: Take out the “taboo” words Use fewer “taboo” words Let the Ss use the “taboo” words Add pictures Have Ss give clues in pairs

Ugly You can’t say: beautiful terrible witch

Chain Stories Like Pictionary Telephone, Ss pass papers and write stories sentence-by- sentence Good for studying sequencers, the past tenses, if/then statements Encourages creative thinking Requires little preparation

Other ideas: T can give a picture prompt to each group T can provide the first sentences: “Yesterday was a terrible day! First, we went to the beach, but it was raining.” Ss can do an if/then chain: – If I had an airplane, I would fly to Australia. – If I flew to Australia, I would visit the beach. – If I visited the beach…

Let’s try it!

The Dicto-gloss Uses listening comprehension Encourages Ss to summarize and use their own words Ss work in groups, discussing the language

How to use it: 1.Prepare Ss for the listening text 2.T reads once; Ss listen for meaning but don’t write 3. T reads two more times; Ss take notes 4.Ss reconstruct the text in groups (exact reconstruction is not necessary!) 5.Ss compare their text with the original text

Let’s try it!

autonomy au·ton·o·my [aw-ton-uh-mee] 1. independence or freedom, as of the will or one's actions: the autonomy of the individual.

In England, a long long time ago, there was a horrible giant. When men would come to fight the giant, the giant would always have a riddle for them: “What do women want most?” he would ask. Of course, the men never knew the answer, and so the giant would always kill them immediately. The people asked King Arthur for help. The King asked all his friends for the answer to the riddle, but nobody knew. One day, King Arthur met a horrible, ugly old woman. “I know the answer to the giant’s riddle,” she said. “Please tell me, old woman!” King Arthur said. “Only if you find me a nice, young, handsome husband,” the old woman said. “Oh gosh,” King Arthur said. Fortunately, his friend, Sir Galahad, was a very nice and selfless man, and he agreed to marry the old woman to help the people of England. Finally, the old woman told King Arthur the answer. King Arthur went to the giant’s home. The giant asked him: “What do women want most?” and King Arthur said, “Their autonomy.” The giant was shocked, and King Arthur immediately killed him. Sir Galahad and the old ugly woman got married. On their wedding night, the old ugly woman turned into a beautiful woman! Sir Galahad was very surprised. “It’s a magic spell,” the woman said. “You can choose: I can be ugly during the day and beautiful at night, or I can be beautiful during the day and ugly at night.” Sir Galahad said, “Oh, I can’t decide. You should choose.” “Why, you gave me my autonomy!” the woman said. “Now the spell is broken, and I will be beautiful during the day and at night, too.” And they lived happily ever after.

Assessment Now that we’ve practiced writing essays, let’s look at how they’re assessed and graded! How can we keep our writing evaluations consistent? – What if more than one person is grading essays?

Use a rubric! A rubric is a set of criteria. They are set on a scale that correspond to points. A rubric can be divided into different categories, for example: Content Organization Grammar

Peace Corps’ Writing Rubric This is the writing rubric that Peace Corps Volunteers use when grading writing. It is graded on a scale from 1-100, in four categories: – Content : 30 points – Organization: 20 points – Language Use/Grammar: 25 points – Vocabulary/Word Usage: 20 points – Mechanics: 5 points

Content: 30 points 30-27Excellent to Very Good 26-22Good to Average 21-17Fair 16-13Poor

Organization 20 points 20- 18Excellent to Very Good 17-14Good to Average 13-10Fair 9-7Poor

Language Use/Grammar: 25 points 25-22Excellent to Very Good 21-18Good to Average 17-11Fair 10-5Poor

Vocabulary/Word Usage: 20 points 20- 18Excellent to Very Good 17-14Good to Average 13-10Fair 9-7Poor

Mechanics: 5 points 5Excellent to Very Good 4Good to Average 3Fair 2Poor

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and how would you use it? If I had any superpower, it would be fire or ice magic. I love magics and supernatural things cuz I read too much mangas. Mangas are japanese comics. Fire is a very powerful element. So is ice. With fire you can protect yourself by making a cloak of fire. And I will use it to fly too. Or just make my punches even more powerfull. So if I had fire as my super power, it would be hot. Ice is a very cool magic. I would use it with a lot of insperation cuz with it you can make ice sculptures. And it helps you express your emotion and passion of what you feel. Well, I would use it to express my feelings too. These powers are very useful to others too. If there is a forest fire you could just absorb or eat the fire. I would say, if there are people who needs me I will go to them right away. These stuffs might be boring or silly, but for me this is my way of thinking and my pride of imagination. I guess the reason of these things are my childhood dreams.

Now Let’s Practice! Using this rubric, get into pairs and grade some of your essays! – Is this easy or difficult? – Is it hard to agree on one grade for each category? – Would you use a different rubric? What would you change?

Thank You!
