TYPE 21 CLUB MEMORIAL From Devon quarry To Devonport Dockyard Dry Dock To Cornwall Memorial Mason To National Memorial Arboretum David Woollard April 20151

Concept A permanent memorial to be placed next to the Type 21 Club bench at the National Memorial Arboretum Plaques affixed to columns/plinths are no longer in favour due to expansion/contraction and fixings issues We needed to think solid engraved stone What better than Dartmoor granite? David Woollard April 20152

Raw Material – The Dry Dock Stone Yard of HG Stacey, Monumental Mason, Tremar Coombe, Nr Liskeard, Cornwall. Paul Stacey was most helpful and supportive and flexible (in time and payment). These granite pieces were of a number provided by Babcock - Devonport Dockyard – for use on Service Memorials. Believed to be from No10 Dry Dock when it was remodelled into a double dock for nuclear submarines. The lower radiused corner suggests it was one of the dock steps. David Woollard April 20153

Outline Design To include: – All eight ships detail – The 21 Club badge/crest – A suitable inscription – A silhouette of a Type 21 High quality black granite top stone would allow the detail required – but had to be sourced from India The ship silhouette would be engraved on a polished slice to be let into the face of the main block The finish of the main block to be ‘rustic punch’ David Woollard April 20154

How to Pay For It… Our cost estimate was £4,000 The 21 Club started the Memorial Fund with £2,000 - profit from previous reunions We launched an appeal via www.type21club.org.uk www.type21club.org.uk Timing was tight but with typical 21 Club spirit the whole project was funded by twentyoners themselves. This included some generous individual donations and donations from other Type 21 Ship Associations David Woollard April 20157

The Real Work Begins Cutting to size at Stacey’s yard The bottom and right hand faces have already been cut This cut was to remove a slice for polishing on which the Type 21 silhouette would be engraved – in France David Woollard April 20158

All Worked By Hand Ron the stonemason who hand punched all the faces – here sizing up to cut the oval recess David Woollard April 20159

Ready For Engraving – 12 Aug 14 Collecting the ‘Oval’ and Top Stone from Stacey’s yard Through the good offices of Sir Ian Garnett we had been offered detailed design support and free engraving of these pieces by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission – but they had to be taken to their workshop in Arras, France……… David Woollard April 201510

CWGC Workshops, Arras – 22 Sep 14 On this quiet residential street in Arras sits the large and busy international workshop of the CWGC Delivery David Woollard April 201511

Transport Transport had been a real issue – how to get ¾ tonne of memorial safely from Cornwall to NMA Alrewas at an affordable cost? Fortunately, after drawing many blanks we found that Tamar Trailers is run by an ex matelot Tim Paige and, although not a 21 man, a good sort. He agreed to the free loan of a substantial four wheel trailer and 21er Dan Doxsey had a big enough car for the towing.
