Back to the Future… Austin Community College Strategic Planning Retreat 3 The Future Is NOW

The Future Today: Flying Car Aeromobil “As a car it fits into any standard parking space, uses regular gasoline, and can be used in road traffic just like any other car. As a plane it can use any airport in the world, but can also take off and land using any grass strip or paved surface just a few hundred meters long.” http://www.aeromobil.com/about#s-video

The Future Today: Hoverboard Lexus Slide “The magnetic field from the track is effectively ‘frozen’ into the superconductors in the board, maintaining the distance between the board and the track— essentially keeping the board hovering. This force is strong enough to allow the rider to stand and even jump on the board.” http://www.lexus-int.com/news/lexus-hoverboard-ride-revealed.html

The Future Today The Internet: – “A limited Internet got started in the 1960s and a much larger network was fully opened to commercial traffic in 1995. Soon after, traffic began to grow by 100 percent a year. Today, the “Internet of Things” describes the increasing integration of physical objects and devices with virtual networks—for example, pacemakers, home thermostats or automated cars controlled remotely—that may improve efficiency and provide economic benefit to its users.”Internet of Things – http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-future-is-now-again-for-back-to-the-future-part-ii/?page=7 http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-future-is-now-again-for-back-to-the-future-part-ii/?page=7

The Future Today Digital Visual Displays – “Smartphones and tablet computers use organic light- emitting diode (OLED) technology to produce images and manufacturers are experimenting with thinner and flexible material for use in new products—like fabrics or windows. Higher pixel density is another trend; Motorola’s Droid Turbo smartphone features an ultrahigh-density screen resolution of 565 pixels per inch and the Samsung Galaxy S6 bumps its resolution to 577. High–pixel density TVs are the next frontier. Smart glasses like Google Glass and others focus on “augmented reality,” wherein a user’s live, real-world experience is enhanced with computer- generated interactive information.”experimentingfeaturesbumpsSmart glassesaugmented reality – http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-future-is-now-again-for-back-to-the-future-part-ii/?page=6 http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-future-is-now-again-for-back-to-the-future-part-ii/?page=6

The Future Today Biometrics – “Advances in computer software and networks in the 1990s allowed the collection of digital fingerprints into huge databases, which led to widespread adoption of fingerprint-ID software in smartphones, government agencies and high-security settings. Apple Pay offers a method for making purchases via the Apple digital stores with a fingerprint ID from iPhones and there are similar systems for some models of Android phones.”Apple Paysimilar systems – http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-future-is-now-again-for-back-to-the-future-part-ii/?page=4 http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-future-is-now-again-for-back-to-the-future-part-ii/?page=4

The Future Today In Back to the Future movies, 30 years resulted in major technological advances. In reality, it will take longer than 30 years to fully realize some of the imagined advances.

The Future Today Some technological advances have taken a shorter time to perfect and become ubiquitous. – Internet – Cell Phones – Robotics/drones – Wireless Networking – GPS – Etc.

The Future Tomorrow Thinking back on today’s presentations and panel discussions… What technological advances will be present 30 years from now, in 2045? Take 5 minutes to discuss at your tables and write your ideas down on the notepads.

The Future Tomorrow Thinking back on today’s presentations and panel discussions… How do we prepare ourselves for these advances? Take 5 minutes to discuss at your tables and write your ideas down on the notepads.

The Future Tomorrow Thinking back on today’s presentations and panel discussions… How does ACC address the needs of these future technologies? Take 5 minutes to discuss at your tables and write your ideas down on the notepads.

The Future Tomorrow Today’s presentations and panel discussions were intended to provide an opportunity for your creative thoughts about what the future holds. As you leave, consider your takeaways about what the future holds for ACC and share them on our website: www.austincc.edu/oiepub/TheFutureIsNow www.austincc.edu/oiepub/TheFutureIsNow

The Future is NOW! Thank you for your participation.
