1. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT EQ: HOW DO THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHARACTERS CONTRIBUTE TO THE TOTAL EFFECT OF A STORY?

2. MAIN CHARACTERS Main characters in a story are like the leading roles. They are the most important and most developed or well- rounded characters in a story. Stories may have more than one main character.

3. ROUND CHARACTERS Have a full range of emotions and feelings; strengths and weaknesses; their complexity can lead in to both internal and external conflict.

4. FLAT CHARACTERS Usually have one distinguishing trait or specific role in the story….they exist mainly to advance the plot.

5. FOIL CHARACTERS Foil characters highlight traits in a main character by being OPPOSITE PERSONALITY. For example, if the main character is timid and shy, a foil character would be loud and outspoken.

6. STEREOPTYPES Characters worn out from overuse, that writers usually avoid- such as the “preppy cheerleader, absent minded professor, or geeky nerd”

7. DYNAMIC CHARACTERS Characters that undergo a MAJOR internal change throughout the course of the story. Usually the changes in the dynamic characters make the THEME of the story more clear.
