CERN Education CERN Education Programmes Rolf Landua CERN Head of Education and Public Outreach

CERN Education Programme The CERN teacher programmes Raise interest of young people in modern science - physics - particle physics/astrophysics/fusion/... How? Introduce modern science topics they find interesting Once their interest is raised, they will ask questions...... and are (more) willing to learn ‘basic’ concepts Why teachers?

CERN Education Programme x 1000 Teachers are.... role models multipliers crucial link for bringing modern science into school classes

10 CERN Education Programme CERN ‘themes’ are attractive for young people: Geneva Airport LHC ANTIMATTER BLACK HOLES DARK MATTER THE ‘GOD’ PARTICLE DARK ENERGY BIG BANG EXTRA DIMENSIONSTHEORY OF EVERYTHING WWW GRID PET SCANHADROTHERAPY

11 CERN Education Programme CERN means ‘science in action’ Theories..... - origin of mass - Dark matter - extra-dimensions...are tested experimentally by reproducing conditions ~ 10 -12 sec after the Big Bang Physics is alive... !!

A metaphore...

CERN Education Programme How researchers view science

CERN Education Programme How school students view science Science teaching climbing wall M g h 1/2 mv 2 What am I doing here?

CERN Education Programme Take students on a sight-seeing tour … GOALS: Use modern physics to inspire and motivate school teachers (and their students): 1) Contact with frontier science (self-confidence, develop/exchange ideas) 2) Increase attractiveness of science lessons (13-15 yrs) Big Bang Antimatter Dark Matter Black Holes Dark Energy Dark Universe Teacher

… End of metaphore

20 CERN Education Programme International “High School Teacher” school (3 weeks) Fully funded by CERN for MS (programme, travel, accommodation) Participants from US, Asia, South America (HELEN), Africa (UNESCO) funded externally In English - 40-45 participants National schools (1 week) - 25-30 courses per year In their mother tongue (visiting scientists from this country) Create teaching resources in national language External funding of travel, accommodation Build networks between teachers and with scientists inside country CERN teacher programmes

Teacher Programme Participation 1998 – 2011 CERN September 2010PH/EDU Teachers and Visits17

CERN trains school teachers in modern physics 2007-2012: more than 5000 teachers

Lectures – Introductions to CERN – Particle Physics – Cosmology – LHC Experiments – Particle Accelerators – Medical Applications of Particle Physics – GRID Visits to experimental facilities Meet physicists in a variety of informal settings Content of teacher programmes Hands-on activities : TEACHER’S LAB All lectures are recorded, archived, and publicly available Very positive feedback But what happens afterwards... ?

2 Educational resources for schools Lesson Plans for teaching modern science in schools (14-15 year olds) First module: ANTIMATTER, available on ‘Education’ website

27 CERN Education Programme Posters: Evolution of the Universe On 17 posters: Key concepts of the evolution of matter and the Universe back to the Big Bang and the questions that LHC will address

More teaching resources in the pipe-line... (2011) Medical applications of particle physics Dark matter Cosmic rays - from a violent universe Dark energy and the mystery of empty space Neutrinos - phantoms of the universe From the Big Bang to us - how do we know about cosmic evolution ? (together with teacher-in-residence)

CERN Education Programme Extended School Visits Part of present Microcosm exhibition space will be transformed Installation of ~ 10 experiment stations Possibility for up to 30 school students to carry out experiments 2-3 technical supervisors + teacher Electron diffraction Photoelectric effect Cloud chambers Rutherford experiment Radioactivity - Geiger counters High Tc magnets Pixel detectors Cosmic ray detectors

21 CERN Education Programme CERN School of High Energy Physics CERN Accelerator School CERN School of Computing Summer Students Programme (3-4 years university) Academic Training Programme Scientists at CERN Physics Students Young researchers CERN Teacher Schools Other CERN Education Activities (NOT Secondary schools)

CERN Education Programme Video-Conferences between CERN and schools/teachers with Europe, US, Asia, and Africa high speed Internet (plus Polycom/Tandberg), also EVO/Skype/Google+ Video-Conferences between CERN and schools/teachers with Europe, US, Asia, and Africa high speed Internet (plus Polycom/Tandberg), also EVO/Skype/Google+ Thank you for your attention.
