Purpose of logging  Pulp and paper: softwood trees; paper and paper  Ontario and Quebec are the leaders in p & p as they have smaller tree sizes.  Lumber: hardwood; building materials  British Columbia produces nearly 50% of Canada’s lumber.  Employment

Commercial vs non- commercial forests  Commercial forests are forests that can be logged for a profit.  Non-Commercial forests are forests that are usually not cut down for industry. They are usually inaccessible by road.  In the text book, on page 280, see the map of commercial and non-commercial forests. What do you notice about the access routes to non- commercial forests?

Cutting techniques  Clear cutting – whish is used in the vast majority of logging; it is the fastest and cheapest method. Loggers remove every tree.  Shelterwood logging – involves clear-cutting only part of a forest. This method allows, over time, the forest to regenerate.  Selective cutting – harvests only mature trees or the desired size, type, or quality. This method is much less disruptive to the forest.

Cutting Techniques

Current issues in forest management 1.Cutting techniques: Money vs. sustainability. 2.Aerial spraying of pesticides: inexpensive and effective vs. endangering wildlife and disrupting forest ecosystems. 3.Speed of extraction vs. sustainability.

Types of protests  Tree spiking  Chaining to trees  Road blocks  Media (David Suzuki)
