These skills included learning how to make a shelter, building a fire, hunting and fishing, and finding drinking water. In what order of importance would you place these skills? 10 About the Author: Gary Paulsen Gary Paulsen was born in Minnesota in 1939. He worked as a magazine editor for nearly a year, which lead to his career as an author. Paulsen’s first book was called Special War written in 1966. He has published nearly 40 books. His well-known book, Hatchet, was written in 1987. Paulsen won the Margaret A. Edwards Award in 1997 for his lifetime achievement in writing for young adults.
