3 About burke He died of starvation. He joined the army but later joined the police force. Burke was one of seven children in his family. Born: 1821 Died: 1861 He died at the age of 40! He was born in Ireland!

4 Burke’s Expedition Robert O’Hara Burke travelled from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria. He took with him 2 years worth of food and 6 tonnes of firewood. He travelled with 28 horses and wagons and 24 camels. The supplies he took with him were 80 pairs of shoes,20 camp beds,30cabbage tree hats,57 buckets, brandy, persevered fruit, vegetable and firearms. They also carried beads with them for a gift to the Aboriginals.

5 Burke’s Expedition The expedition set off from Royal Park Melbourne at about 4pm on 20 August 1860 watched by around 15,000 spectators. The 19 men of the expedition included 5 Englishmen, 6 Irishmen, 4 Indian sepoys, 3 Germans and an American.

7 TIMELINE OF EVENTS!! 20 th June 1860 Robert o Hara burke was chosen to lead the Victorian exploring expedition. 20 th August 1860 The expedition departs from royal park in Melbourne. 15 th October 1860 The expedition arrives at Menindie. 19 th October 1860 Burke leads s small advance party from Menindie. 11 th November 1860 The advance party arrives at coopers creek.

8 TIMELINE OF EVENTS!! 16th December 1860 Burke, William wills, John King and Charlie Gray leave cooper’s Creek for the gulf of Carpentaria. 26 January 1861 William Wright leads the supply party north from Menindie. 11 th or 12 th February 1861 Burke and wills reach the northernmost point of their journey, just a few kilometres from the gulf of Carpentaria.

9 TIMELINE OF EVENTS!! 17 th April 1861 Gray dies from hunger and exhaustion. 21th April 1861 William Brahe leads the supply party away from coopers creek. Burke, wills and king arrived at coopers creek. 29 th April 1861 Brahes’ party meets up with the survivors of Wright's party. 18 th June 1861 Brahe and Wright arrive at Menindie.

10 TIMELINE OF EVENTS!! 28 th June 1861 Burke dies from hunger and exhaustion. 29 th June 1861 Wills dies from hunger and exhaustion. 15 th September 1861 King is found by Hewitt's rescue party!!

11 Towards the end of June 1861, Burke and King decided to return upstream to the Dig Tree to see if a rescue party had arrived. Wills became too weak to continue, so he was left behind at his own insistence at Breerily Waterhole with some food, water and shelter. Burke and King continued upstream for another two days until Burke became too weak to continue. The next morning Burke died. King stayed with his body for two days and then returned downstream to Breerily Waterhole where he found that Wills had died as well.
