2 PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS People are loosely grouped according to categories of personality based on the work of American psychologist John Holland. People tend to work in occupations/environments that suites their personality There are two sides to personality: Temperament – inclinations we are born with (hardwired from birth). Character – set of habits we acquire as we grow and mature. 6 Types in total – most have one dominant and a combination of the other types, all are =!!

3 DOER (Realistic) Work that involves tools, machines, hands on learning. Enjoy the outdoors, athletic activity. Detail type. Example occupations: Chef, air traffic controller, construction manager, electrician, landscape architect, veterinary technician.

4 THINKER (Investigative) Interested in work that involves Science and Math. They like to be precise and they enjoy learning, investigating, evaluation and analyzing things. Example occupations: archaeologist, chiropractor, pharmacist, urban planner, marine biologist.

5 CREATOR (Artistic) Interested in work that is related to the creative arts, drama, music and all things imaginative. They have artistic abilities and like to work in unstructured situations. Example occupations: actor, dancer, DJ, florist, graphic designer, photographer, musician.

6 HELPER (Social) Enjoy working with and helping people. Helpful, friendly and trustworthy. They like to have a positive effect in their work by teaching, counselling or curing people and by helping them access information. Example occupations: teacher, child/youth worker, dental hygienist, event planner, nurse, social worker.

7 ORGANIZER (Conventional) Detailed oriented and likes structure. They value success in business and like working with details, data & numbers. Example occupations: accountant, auditor, computer operator, engineering, travel agent.

8 PERSUADER (Enterprising) Ambitious, social and energetic. Interested in situations involving sales, management and public speaking. They value success in business and politics and usually enjoy being in positions of influence and leadership. Example occupations: curator, financial planner, lawyer, politician, salesperson.
