PRESENTED BY: ALYSSA NELSON SPORT AND EXERCISE PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM MINNESOTA STATE UNIVERSITY MANKATO Career Transition in Sport: Building Champions for Life

Transition From Sport Every transition has multiple outcomes depending on the individuals perception of the situation. Causes of Transition  Age, deselection, injury, and free choice. Negative outcomes of transition:  Unhappiness  Addictions  Identity Crises

Transition From Sport Cont. “Many athletes felt ignored, used, forgotten, and discarded in retirement” (Sinclair and Orlick, 1993) Student athletes feel that preretirement planning should be addressed while still competing. Who is at more risk?  Men’s hockey and Baseball  More of an opportunity to become a professional athlete.

Purpose of Research To explore student –athletes readiness for life after college. Use the findings to design a curriculum for transition in sport for athletes.

Experimental Hypothesis Junior and senior student athletes have a higher athletic identity and level of stress compared to freshman and sophomore student athletes. A lower athletic identity and life stress, as well as a higher life satisfaction and positivity will predict readiness for life after college.

Method Survey measuring athletes:  athletic identity  perceived stress  positivity  life satisfaction  mindset  Paper and pencil surveys were distributed to coaches or graduate assistants, athletes then completed survey at most convenient time.
