1 7 th Grade Week 29 Agenda & Obj. 3/18/13-3/22/13 Monday & Tuesday: Poetry/Drawing Conclusions 7.4.10.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature and other texts 7.4.2.2 Determine theme or central idea of a text 7.4.4.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings. 7.4.5.5 Analyze how a drama’s or poem’s form or structure (e.g., soliloquy, sonnet) contributes to its meaning. Wednesday: Review & Using Context Clues 7.11.2.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation and spelling when writing. 7.4.10.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature and other texts Thursday: Test Friday: Documentary 7.4.7.7 Compare and contrast a written story, drama, or poem to its audio, filmed, staged, or multimedia version, analyzing the effects of techniques unique to each medium

2 Daily Writing: My Thoughts 3/18/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: What do you think about when you can't fall asleep? What do you think makes a happy family? What things do you think are beautiful?

3 Monday: Poetry Hand in your final project. Planner: Poetry worksheet due tomorrow. Midterm on everything we’ve covered this quarter on Thursday. Reject/Accept nomination form due THIS Wednesday! NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED.

4 Monday: Share & Poetry Textbook pg. 542. Read about the authors. o Why do you appreciate your family? o What is a goal to which you aspire? Read “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes, “The Village Blacksmith” by Longfellow, and “Fog” by Sandburg. Finish poetry worksheet (due tomorrow what you don’t get done in class).

5 Monday: Share & Poetry Everyone needs to share either something from their final project OR read the poem they wrote. If you don’t share today, you’ll share later this week.

Do not start the timed writing until I instruct you to do so. (1 ST Period start at 7:50; 2 nd period start at 8:45). Individual work! Due at the end of the period!

9 Daily Writing: BEST Friend 3/20/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: What is most important to you in a friend--loyalty, generosity, honesty--why? What makes your best friend your best friend?

13 To make an inference is to take a critical look at what you are reading and make an assumption based on your own experiences.

14 When you draw a conclusion you use 2 things: What you know in your head. and What you ’ ve read in the story. A conclusion is the decision you come to when you put these two together.

21 Misplaced or Dangling Modifiers Modifiers are words or word groups that describe other words in a sentence. In the following sentence, the words in bold modify woman. The woman who is sitting by the door is my sister.

22 Misplaced or Dangling Modifiers A misplaced modifier, because it is not correctly placed, describes the wrong word or words: INCORRECT Anne saw the neighbor’s dog drinking a Diet Coke. It sounds like the dog was drinking a diet coke! CORRECT Drinking a Diet Coke, Anne saw the neighbor’s dog.

23 A dangling modifier “dangles” because the word or words it is supposed to describe are not in the sentence. INCORRECT Jogging in the park, a dog bit me. The dog wasn’t jogging in the park; the actual jogger is missing from the sentence. CORRECT Jogging in the park, I was bitten by a dog. OR While I was jogging in the park, a dog bit me. Misplaced or Dangling Modifiers

28 Friday: Documentary Take notes on documentary (at least a page). Write 3 paragraphs comparing and contrasting your novel (Hoot or Tangerine) to the documentary. Due by the end of the period! Have a great spring break! Planner: Language Arts packet due Monday, April 1 (the day we get back from break).
