13. To make an inference is to take a critical look at what you are reading and make an assumption based on your own experiences.

14. When you draw a conclusion you use 2 things: What you know in your head. and What you ’ ve read in the story. A conclusion is the decision you come to when you put these two together.

21. Misplaced or Dangling Modifiers Modifiers are words or word groups that describe other words in a sentence. In the following sentence, the words in bold modify woman. The woman who is sitting by the door is my sister.

22. Misplaced or Dangling Modifiers A misplaced modifier, because it is not correctly placed, describes the wrong word or words: INCORRECT Anne saw the neighbor’s dog drinking a Diet Coke. It sounds like the dog was drinking a diet coke! CORRECT Drinking a Diet Coke, Anne saw the neighbor’s dog.

23. A dangling modifier “dangles” because the word or words it is supposed to describe are not in the sentence. INCORRECT Jogging in the park, a dog bit me.
